Simple polypaint export failing

I am attempting to do some simple polypaint textures on a figure to be used as an overlay. I have the sculpt in a layer, I fill the mesh with white, I add some simple color to it and export out the map using the multi-map exporter.

This is sometimes the result. Not always and I can’t figure out the pattern. Sometimes it has everything as expected, sometimes it has a very pixelated mark on black, sometimes it has a white blob around it and then the mark on a back background.

Any assistance would be helpful. Thank you.
