"Show Alternate Document View"

Seems like a really great feature, being able to split the view into two seperate ones. Like maya or any other software package.

Hidden under Preferences -> Interface, is the Show Alt Doc View, and you would think that your two view would be independent… but they are not, and therefore useless?

The tooltip suggests that you may individually zoom the views, and that you may, but Zooming isn’t Scaling. It refers to the document Zoom.

I’d say it would be a pretty nice addition to zbrush to be able to use this Alt Doc View for what you would expect it to do, any plans for this Pixologic?

having multiple views open eats ram and video card. Since Zbrush is so RAM intensive with a single viewport I wouldn’t want to see how much lag there would be with two windows open. ugh.

but to each there own.

Well, I understand your point of view, but I belive we might use zbrush for different ends.

To name just one specific example were this might be useful, I just recently finished concepting a somewhat cave-like enviroment from storyboards. So, I knew the angle and the general feel, and was populating it with various ingredients. This required not so much the millions of polys that zbrush can handle, but having a fixed angle to look at your work, i.e. the camera angle, would be somewhat pleasant for obvious reasons I’m sure you understand.

Since polycount is rather low, concepting at this stage I believe would qualify for the use of multiple viewports. Although I’m sure, at a coding p.o.v., implementing this feature would be somewhat different than that of a opengl based approach, thus requireing more RAM. But I still believe my point remains valid.

I get exactly what you’re saying. I’m just thinking you’re using Zbrush as a tool that it isn’t intended to be. If you’re just doing previs and setting up a shot there are better tools designed for that purpose…pencil and paper, and another traditional 3d app.

Again, my 2cents. I’m sure a lot of other people will agree with you that it should have the ability that you’re asking for. I would love to be able to look at a profile while sculpting on the front of a bust or something of that nature. With the current hardware limitations I just don’t see it being a realistic goal. But again, I could be way off on this, and maybe it will be in Z4.

I find it incredible that Zbrush does not have this option. I understand the technical limitations, but it should be up to us whether to activate it or not. It wouldn’t be the first Zbrush option that crashes our PC (and probably not the last). It would be incredibly useful, and a basic tool that any 3D software has.
