shouldn't INIT ZBRUSH also clear out the TEXTURE and ALPHA palettes?

howdy,

so i’m trying to get a handle on texture management inside of zbrush and it seems that for alphas and textures, the only way to get rid of imported and created textures and alphas is to actually shut down zbrush and restart.

and while INIT ZBRUSH will get rid of new created TOOLS, it does nothing for the texture and alpha palette…

just for the sake of consistency, shouldn’t it get rid of newly created textures and alphas as well?

it would be really nice if you could address all such “repositories” as a list and actually manually remove entities (whether tool, alpha or texture) individually.

but short of that, it would be nice if init zbrush did that.

am i missing something or is this currently how zb works?

and if so - feature request!

A few items that may be of interest.

There is actually a “Remove Texture” button in the Texture menu, which deletes the selected texture. In most menus there in a small “R” button (restore configuration) button next to the item info slider that will tidy up items lists that have become too large by hiding most items. Individual tools can be removed from the file by deleting all subtools within.

hey scott,

yeah, i know those buttons but the ‘R’ in alpha only cleans up the frequently used textures pop up and not the main alpha palette and the “remove” button on textures SOUNDS exactly like what i’m looking for but in actual function it seems to replace it with just a big white blank… so it’s less of a “remove” and more of a “replace with a big white blank”.

oooooooo… but thanks for the tools tip! that’s nice that that’s one list that i can actually delete something from!

The Alpha and Texture palettes have never worked in the way you want. The only way to clear them of imported images is to restart, I’m afraid.

One thing to be careful of is that if you use QuickSave, InitZBrush actually deletes all of the files you have quick saved.

hey marcus,

actually, i guess the underlying question is how much do we need to worry about it… if i have created or imported a crapload of new textures and alphas and tools in zbrush, are they all occupying workspace memory or are they just cached on disk somewhere until i actually invoke them on canvas?

because of how zbrush implicitly does not give you fine grain controlled over your collections of meshes and images, it seems to indicate that it is not something i need to actively manage…

but is that the case?

thanks.

MeaLeaYing - It sounds like you speak from experience!

jin,

I don’t honestly know. But I think it unlikely that the way ZBrush handles textures would adversely affect performance.

TWICE!

Once because I had no idea it would happen, and the second time because I had forgotten while showing someone how you could just reset everything, they were a bit confused when my language went down the tube as the volume went up.

Personally I don’t use it any more, actually restarting ZBrush seems to work better for me.

thanks much for the info everybody.
