Separating Maya model elements

I’ve imported a Maya model into ZBrush- how can I separate individual elements of this model so that I may texture them? I’ve also tried importing separate pieces in one at a time, but unable to load them as Subtools. Everytime I import in a new .obj, the previous Subtool vanishes, both within the Subtool menu and onscreen. Any help is appreciated.

If your obj. consists of more than one element then just do a Groups Split to turn those elements into individual subtools.

If you import an obj. and make it a polymesh3D, it doesn’t really disappear. It’s still in your tool palette, you just have to Append the previous subtool to the present one.

In Maya, I separated the various elements from each other, but when I export everything as an obj into ZBrush, it groups everything together, and when I try Group Splitting, the error “Mesh is composed of 1 group only, please assign groups and try again”. Isn’t there a way of importing in the model as two separate obj’s and making each a Subtool? I saw a tutorial which mentioned this, but lacked specific info on the process. When I import the first obj, it appears onscreen and within the Subtool menu, but when I import a second obj, the first obj vanishes on screen and inside the Subtool menu. I’ve got a model of a clothed person, and I’d like to separate the clothing articles for individual texturing.

Check your Maya export options and make sure your not merging everything when you export.

If you are going to import them seperately, then import the first one then make it a Polymes3D then import the second and make it a polymesh3D then Append(Subtool menu) the first one.

Thank you, I followed your instructions, but the resulting first Subtool at the top of the menu will not shut off- the eye icon is greyed out- the second Subtool underneath it can be turned on and off. How can I make the top Subtool visible/invisible? Also, I recently upgraded my Mac OS to 10.6.5, and now “GoZ” ceases to launch Maya- any ideas on that? I’m using ZBrush 3.5. Thank you again

Select the second subtool so it is active then you can click the eye icon of the first one to make it visible and invisible. You can’t make invisible the active subtool.

I don’t use Maya or Mac.

How come your not using ZBrush 4?

Thanks for explaining Subtool visible/invisible- it works now. I recently downloaded ZB4 and will try using it next- maybe GoZ will work w/ that version. I bought ZBrush simply to texture and sculpt my Maya models, and though ZB is amazing, I’m finding clear and current tutorials hard to come by. What do you use to render out your final ZB models?

If your just starting out in ZBrush, there are plenty of tutorials available. Check out the following links.

I can’t afford Maya or Max. I wish I could. I use Blender and Vue for rendering mostly but ZBrush rendering is also very good, especially with BPR.

Thanks, I previously viewed the Pixologic tutorials which I found too brief- especially regarding the GoZ function which is actually much more involved for creating decent maps. I’ve also looked at the cannedmushroom tuts, but I really need current info focused on Maya/ZBrush/Maya pipeline. ZBrush is incredible, but requires alot of specific info to fully use and understand. It’s unfortunate that Pixologic does not offer comprehensive tutorials. Thanks again!
