Few want to admit this, but not all wizards follow the rules and want to serve the common good. Such renegades pose a threat to the credibility of the academy and the security of the entire Universe. The Council of Masters created the Great Inquisition - an organization whose members hunt down fugitives and traitors, catch and deliver them to a special prison on a remote dead world. Inquisitors are the most cruel, cunning and loyal magicians that only the masters can find, they are secret magic police, with unlimited powers and the most perfect (and not always legal) provision. They work alone, but don’t underestimate them - every inquisitor is a perfect weapon.
When the turmoil with artifacts began and the first rumors began to circulate, the Council of Masters sent all available inquisitors to deal with the situation and find out if the traitors were guilty of this. And if so, destroy them.
