seelctive UI options

total newbie question: is there a way to disable all the tools related to paint and only have the tools for modeling?

im going thru a few online movs from different places and they all talk about paint this and paint that and never get down to the nitty gritty of “lets load a JPG chacrater, use it as a template to model over, and then skin the Z-spheres and dispalce the mesh for export”.

forgive me.

You can set up and kind of custom ui you want.

Ctrl-click drag items where you want them.

you can save ui setups from the preferences menu.

I have one for modelling, one for texturing, one for experimenting with materials, etc.

A tip…is to ctrl drag the load ui button to somewhere so it’s visible in the same place for each ui…that way you can switch back and forth when you need to.

right. i understand that you can dock things where you want and move them around, but there is no way to say “only supply me the tools relevant to modeling”, right? that would have to be done manually (which woudl imply that you know which tools are which, thus making the wish moot).

if all i want to do is model and not paint, for example.

thanks for the reply!

You could duplicate and edit the startup script. DUPLICATE first though!!!

However why? You only need select the tools you need, they are hidden by deafult. Perhaps we don’t undeerstand the specifics of what you are asking.

Is the reply fromaminuts you have there the link to the Moldy Modelling station is just superb to modelling¡

If I can find a few minutes in the next few days,

I will try to set up a ui you could try…that is just for modelling. Perhaps that will give you a place to start.

again, forgive me… if i dont want to even see the tools for painting and only want to sculpt, i was hopeful that you could completely disable and not see the tools relevant to paiting. if all i want to do is model and not even have access to the paint tools, it would be nice to load a “modeling” UI so i dont even have access to the paint tools or icons. i fully understand that you can manually do this, i was just hoping for a model only mode.

thanks for your replies.

You probably could manage this through some clever scripting, but it begs the question: Why? Doing so would basically disable 90% of what makes ZBrush unique and powerful. If flies in the face of the developers’ intent and cripples your creativity based on preconceived notions of how a “modeling” software should function. ZBrush is at times very frustrating due to it’s unique approach and unusual methodology, but in the end learning to work within it’s framework pays off tremendously in terms of creative output. Challenge yourself and the depth of this program will be revealed.
(End of ridiculous evangelical rant)

Something to keep in mind:

None of the tools in the Tool palette’s popup window can be used for sculpting. So hiding any of them doesn’t make much sense. Here’s the philosophy:

To select something to draw, use the Tool palette popup.

To edit something once you’ve drawn it, use the Transform palette to enter Edit mode and then use the various sculpting tools that will become available there. You will NEVER use any other tools to edit the currently-selected tool (unless you’re using Projection Master, and you should run its tutorial to learn more about that).

In addition, the Tool palette will change depending upon what type of tool you have selected. So if you have a 2.5D brush selected, the Tool palette will only have modifiers that can be used on that brush. If you have a parametric object, then things like the Deformation menu become available. If a polymesh object is selected, the Geometry menu gets some new features, and if it’s a ZSphere model you’ll have the Adaptive Skin and Unified Skin menus. In other words, ZBrush already changes itself to make just the options available that you can actually use for the currently selected tool.

So it really seems to me that your question stems more from a misunderstanding of how ZBrush works than from an actual need.

i heard that. its all very different from anything ive used int he last 15 years.

pluggin away.

thanks!
