Sculptris Pro, IMM and other related questions

These may seem dumb questions because I haven’t used ZBrush for a while. I was excited when I heard about the inclusion of Scultptris into ZB itself but kinda disappointed when I tried it because it didn’t behave the same as Sculptris. In Sculptris I can easily punch out a decent sculpt fast but with Sculptris Pro, it seems more awkward.

Firstly, I got used to using the right mouse button in Sculptris to subtract when using drawing tools rather than the alt key in Zbrush. Is there any way I can change it so I can do it like in Sculptris? I would prefer to use the alt key for all navigation and other non-drawing functions instead like unmasking.

Secondly, I don’t understand why they didn’t include the move tool (or layer brush) in the Sculptris Pro toolbox. I don’t like using the snakehook tool to ‘move’ geometry. The grab tool was fine in Sculptris but now I have to move then smooth to get the shape in Zbrush. I’m also finding flaws in the adaptive size method of working but that’s another subject in itself. So, are there any ‘move’ tools that are Sculptris Pro friendly that actually work like move should?

Thirdly, as mentioned, I am more comfortable with the Sculptris method of navigation. Can I change ZB so it is like Sculptris when it comes to navigation?

Finally, I’m not sure if this has changed or not but I tried using a simple sphere IMM brush and I creating a sphere in my mesh but I couldn’t make the sphere shrink uniformally. I was only allowed to enlarge the sphere and scale it non-uniformly. It was frustrating. How can I place an IMM brush onto my mesh so that it scales up and down uniformly and does NOT scale non-uniformly?

Sorry, for the dumb questions but I am honestly flustered by how frustrating of a time I am having in ZB right now.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers,
Paul

Glad you mentioned the Move tool - it’s unfortunately not compatible with Sculptris Pro and it’s my no. 1 sculpting tool. I’m going back to using Dynamesh until something like the grab tool is available…
Btw, ZB2018 is still fantastic

Cool down guys.
Just play around with options and you’ll convert the snake hook into the drag brush.
Mostly it’s just turning off “Adaptive size” and “Combined”, sometimes adjust Subdivide.

As an Sculptris lover since 2010 I started a Sculptris Pro thread over there at tutorials:
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?211763-Sculptris-Pro-tips-tricks-amp-warnings&p=1230170#post1230170

I guess no one would mind if we do some trouble shooting there as well.

Ah, well watch this video at least. ZClassroom Lesson - Getting Started with Sculptris Pro
Helps a lot in basic understanding.

Unfortunately, Pixo took a bit away of easiness, but gave a bunch of new possibilities.
Anyway, I am sometimes asking myself if a “do this easy, stupid old sculptris thing” button, would not be a good idea

Navigation? Check out the manual, there was something like right mouse button. But I guess nothing like Sculptris.
I use the middle mouse button script:
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?183019-quot-Middle-Button-quot-Plug-in-for-ZBrush-4R6
You’ll love it. Works with 2018.
There you can adjust 3ds max or Blender navigation. AND you can use your mousewheel for zooming
(Or assign to slider on tablet)

No answers to your last questions, sorry.

Knacki,
Thanks for the info on Sculptris Pro, well worth looking into. Good to see there are workarounds. It’s also possible to combine Sculptris approaches with Dynamesh so plenty of flexibility there.

I played with it a bit more today and got a decent partial head done just for a test but it took me a hour and with a lot of patience. I found that by NOT having the Move tool Sculptris Pro accessible can actually be a good thing but only if not used for too much movement. You can move then smooth for a decent result. You just don’t do too many large movements that splinter the mesh (unless that’s what you want).

I have actually pinned down one of the major problems and that is with the resolution change by either having a smaller or bigger mouse, or by zooming in or out. Having a lot of detailed work brutally smoothed out/decimated just because the edge of the brush cursor was near the area when you smoothed your mesh can really be a kick in the teeth. Yeah, I know you can undo but it’s disheartening nonetheless.

There also seems to be different algorithms for the brush between Sculptris and Pro. EG the flatten tool works great in Sculptris but in ZB and Sculptris Pro there seem to be slightly raised edges when you use it.

I think that I could overcome the issues I have with Sculptris Pro with a bit of patience and mixing other Zbrush techniques as well.
