Sculpting Brushes and Spotlight - Vary Strength Based on Pixel Values?

Is there any way to have the Z Strength of a sculpting brush affected by the luminance value of the current Spotlight texture? For example if you have a grayscale bitmap of varied gradient design patterns and want to add or subtract that from your model using a standard or clay brush like a stencil.

The way it works currently the intensity of the brush is either 0 or 100% (multiplied by the current brush strength of course), but no variation based on the pixel values in the spotlight texture. The only workaround I’ve found is to paint the spotlight into the RGB as a texture and then convert to a MASK afterwards.
