Sculpt layers greyed out??

Hey, I am working on a sculpt, using several layers at different resolutions. I understand that you can’t turn on/off or edit a layer while at a different division level, but after reopening my scene today, I noticed that the first Layer I made is permanently greyed out, regardless of the SDiv level.

Is there a way to ‘bake’ a layer, so that I can then make a new layer at a lower level?

I went ahead and made 3 layers at low medium and high levels, presuming it would act like mudbox’s layers. Oops!

NB. I know about the layer delete baking the layers detail. I guess Im asking if you can have 2 fully editable layers at different levels on 1 subtool at the same time?

You can have mulitple layers on multiple SuBD levels, but only one active layer at once. If a layer is greyed out, another one must be active at another subD level. Find the one that is active, then click on the layer slot (not the eyeball icon…that is visibility), to activate or deactivate it. You will then be able to create/edit layers on different subD levels.

Deleting a layer while it is visible will “bake” the layer information into the mesh.

Thanks Scott,
That makes alot of sense!

It is actually quite similar to Mud’s layers.
