Sculpey clay sculpt wip...

Hey all…had some free time today to finally download the pics from my camera. I was inspired by a couple of men from this forum and their sculpey clay works…Glen Southern and Rich Cummings aka 50s Kid…so I bought some Sculpey clay a verrrrrrrrrrrrrry long time ago …over a year for sure…well finally took the time to open the box of clay and see if it was still even usable…and suprisingly it is…hopefully the box of Super Sculpey I have is still in good shape after this project is finished…so anyways…got a little time to play with it a week ago during an episode of insomnia and a case of “what to do at 2 in the morning”… Saw the box sitting on my shelf and went to work…middle of the night and I am out in the yard in my unmentionables scavanging around for wire for the skeleton…didn’t take a pic of the skeleton…but within a couple of hours I did what you see below…It will be a zombie of course…lol…do what you know best I guess…well these are two progression shots…the second one by the ice bucket I took a few minutes ago…I am not much of a photographer, so please forgive me and my feeble attempts in presenting this little progression wip…( hopefully the sculpt will turn out as I envision it…) Sculpey is pretty easy so far to work with…the extraordinary thing for me was the fact that after putting the first layer of meat on this fellow, I stood him up on my desk and he was balanced on his own…very lucky…I didndt strip the insulation off the wire so I hope that doesnt affect the finished product too much…Still a long ways to go on this guy, but I haven’t really truly tried to seriously sculpt anything in clay since ye ole high school days of 82’…

If you are a sculptor or modeler with clay it would be cool to see some of your works and wips also…

all c and c welcome…thnx

Ron

Hi, Ron! Thanks for the note on this post. Looks like you have a good start there. I’m putting together a reply with some links and stuff. Be back in a bit. Rich.

Hi, Ron, back at ya. Like I mentioned, Super Sculpey (I wish they’d change the name of that) is the way to go, be sure to use a good strong armature, too. Coat hanger wire is good. (You’re pics look like you’re using regular white sclupey,…bad stuff. Too soft and weak for good details.) Then you can build up the structure with ‘Magic Sculpt, Plumber’s Epoxy’ or something similar. Aluminum foil can be used to flesh out the large areas as Super Sculpey doesn’t cure well in thick sections. I try to keep it at half an inch. The main thing is to have a sturdy piece you can move around as you work. I clamp mine in a vise. I use a thick threaded rod to attach the armature to, you can also bolt it down to a wooden base, etc. There is a new ‘grey’ SS out, but I haven’t seen it. Alot of guys make their own mixing black Premo with the pinkish SS. Why ‘pink’,…I don’t get it. Anyway that’s some basics. Maybe these links will help, too. I want to see some updates. Later, Rich.

Ah ha! Nearly overlooked this. I should have realised Ron’s creative side wasn’t limited purely to the ‘virtual’ world of the PC.

Nice start, but how’s this coming along?

Nice work by the way, 50’sKID

Be careful with plumber’s epoxy. Some of it is toxic if you injest it, and if you’re in the habit of licking you tools to keep them smooth that’s not a good thing.

Another goodie is greenstuff, or kneadatite. It’s a two part epoxy that miniatures (pewter toy soldiers) are sculpted from.

I had an idea it wasn’t something you should have as a snack! But just how toxic is it? I use Milliput all the time, and Taxidermists putty, which is basically the same thing. I lick my sculpting tools and fingers all the time to get smooth surfaces etc. I try not to do it, but I’m in such a habit of doing it, It just happens unconsiously without me realising :o

AFAIK milliput isn’t toxic. Not sure about the other. You should try greenstuff though. Really good stuff.

RE: White SuperSculpey-
Thanks for the confirmation that white is lame over armature material… Thought it was my rusty hands. Back to pink. Too bad-- if it sits, the pink is tougher to knead to the same soft consistency as white. Maybe I’ll test white for extruding appliques. Anybody ever baked white onto pink?

RE: Licking tools-
Yes, bad idea. I point-up Kolinski sable brush tips by pulling them over my tongue-- until a freelancer mentioned that there are rare cases of anthrax attributed to ingesting what is essentially weasel fur on a stick…

Re: Licking tools…

In the next town, Montclaire, was a watch face manfufacturing plant at the turn of the century. Quite a few women were working from home. And they used to paint the glowing radium infested glow mix onto the watch faces. After a prolonged exposure to the radiation and litteraly gobbling that suff up of years, their faces litteraly started to fall off. One can still visited their graves where they lie in lead coffins as the radiation would be to hard for people walking by otherwise.

So, licking tools is a very bad idea. You never know what you catch…
Lemo

  Oh dear, that’s really tragic stuff lemo.

I also lick sable brushes as it happens, Davinci990! I also clean the toilet out with my tongue, and lick the door handles of public toilets  Just kidding, that’s disgusting! :stuck_out_tongue:

Seriously though, it’s obviously a bad habit a few people have, I really must stop myself from now on

I am a dirty unrepentant tool licker. I just make sure to use non-toxic and non-radioactive materials.

I also think I will worry more about getting hit by a car and/or lightning than catching anthrax from a brush. :stuck_out_tongue: So avoid roads and open sky too Angelstein.

Oh yeah, don’t forget that bbq causes cancer too.

50,
I like your vise workflow tip. Since I can’t find my turntable from a few moves ago, think I’ll try it!

Admiring your dragons… I wondered: Have you ever made a map for your ZB dragons, from a photo of your clay detailings? They’re so tight.

(Then I jumped to: Did he ever finish his Rat Fink Sled Pilot project?!)

=dp

There is a dancer in NYC who became quite popular for a few month not for his dancing but for the fact that he made drums out of animal skin in a brooklyn warehouse and actually caught anthrax doing that. So Anthrax is definitely rare but should not be excluded on your list of ‘outdoors’ dangers.

So… boil your tool before you lick it.

 Lemo

PS:Try to lick your elbow! If you can, dial 911!

Hi, Angelstein, thanks, yeah, I think Ron has a few surprises in him, don’t know what happened to him since this post. This one makes me think of an Aurora monster stepping of a grave base. I’d like to see some of your Zombie-gorey-monster heads done in clay, Ron. Maybe that one with the ‘boney ridges’.
Good point on the warning, Bill, it might be a good idea to keep a wet sponge in a tray of water for ‘licking’ the tool.

Lemo,…ugh!

Davinci990, no, I never thought of doing the mapping thing. I’m sure there are better ways than a vise, but it works.
The armature is not to be looked over, it’s the foundation and needs to be sturdy and designed so you can access the sculpt from any postion. I fought the ‘White Stuff’ for a long time. As for the ‘Polar Blast’ picture, I have jumped back into hands-on illustration and that is one I plan to draw for prints, I havn’t deleted the Zbrush tools yet though. 50.

lemonado boil everything before you lick it!

Just to discover a new digital clay Sculpting

bicc39, .

Hi Frenchy, Your internet links are endless, never heard of that one. 50.

My dog seemed rather alarmed at that statement.

Wow, I get busy in the real world for a few days and KapowYah!!! The little ole thread has been busy in my abscence. Kewlies.

You guys are great. I haven’t had the time to work on him since I first posted. It is supposed to rain here for the next couple of days, so muhahhahahahha no work and all play for me (and the zombie).

Thanks for the info and pm, Rich.:+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:

Well I am glad I didn’t like my tools. But unforunately the white stuff is so soft that I licked my model directly to smooth out some rough edges…:o Is this a bad thing? It’s a great way to texture the skin, especially if you have a rough tongue… I had my cat, Sweetheart lick it as well when my jaws got tired. (she has a rougher tongue)…and knowing her, she would have griped and meowed me to death had she not been able to have a paw in it’s creation.

Hopefully Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning I will have an updated couple of pics.

thnx again, everyone. Ya’ll are way too funny…lol
