Scripting horns?

Hi there, I’m new to the site and to ZBrush in general. I’m sculpting a “faun” for a 3D modelling course and was wondering if there was a quick way to rough in the general shape of a spiraling horn on a subtool.

At this point, it seems I would have to keep rotating around the horn to sculpt the cuts needed to get a spiralling look. Is there a way to wrap a path around the horn and have Zbrush take away what I need?

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Is your horn already finished and you need it twisted?

Try the twist button in your deformations palate to twist the whole object.

You may have to build it straight first then twist it, sculpt it and move it into position.

You could use zspheres to build the general shape also.

I used zspheres to create the horn, like an auger. I’m trying to add a helical twist to the already twisted horn.

Thanks for the quick response

You could create the type of spiral you want by setting the Initialize options for the Spiral3D parametric tool, then use that with Project All to project the detail on to your mesh. The basic workflow is:

  1. Adjust Tool>Initialize settings for Spiral3D.
  2. Select mesh with horn and press Tool>SubTool>Append.
  3. Select the Spiral from the pop-up. When you get a message asking if you want to convert to a polymesh click ‘Yes’.
  4. Make sure the Horn mesh and the Spiral are the only two subtools visible, and that the Horn mesh is selected.
  5. Press Tool>Morph Target> Store MT.
  6. Press Tool>SubTool>Project All.

The details from the Spiral will be transferred to the mesh. The point of step (5) is that you can use the Morph Brush to tidy up areas that didn’t project neatly. You may also need to experiment with the Project All settings.

See the zip for a quick example.

you could also try using the spiral primitive. Use initialize to get it into the general shape you need with a spin on it. Then mask it all and play with the col and row within masking. You can get similar results as the image. Then use inflat within the deformation area. Finally make it a polymesh 3d and then you can start sculpting on it.

Just another idea that came to me.

That’s actually exactly what I was looking to do originally. Like I said, I’m very new to Zbrush so it’ll take me a little time to get used to the program and decipher everything that was said but I appreciate the input. I started playing around with the horns I had already made and put them on my head and I started using pinch to give a soft, more organic spiral to the horns. This is the result so far:
