Sci-Fi assault rifle - The M50 (my first ZBrush project)

Base mesh created in 3DS MAX 2008. I still need to texture and create normal maps. This gun is from an old tabletop miniatures game called Warzone: Mutant Chronicles. This my first Zbrush work, so please tell me what you think so far.

great image. I wish there were more tutorial about doing start edge models in ZB but haven’t seen much yet. Any tips?

I know there a BTS Character Modeling for Production by Cajun Hylton at Gnomon availble, but I just ordered the last one.

expensive.

Very nice.
One suggestion though: I think you shold smooth out the handle edges a little. It looks too rectangular for a person grab a nice to hold of it .
Oh, and one question. Could you post the MAX wireframe?I’m also new at ZBrush and I’m having some problems in achieving the rough edges when importing from MAX and then subdividing the model.
Thanks.

Here ya go -

As you can see, I sort of pre-subdivided the model in MAX. This way I did not have to subdivide it as much in ZBrush. This also makes sure that ZBrush subdivides the model logically. Use the CONNECT function in MAX to create more vertices/edges. Also, don’t forget to turn off SMOOTH(SMT) under the geomentry submenu in ZBrush when you want to subdivide without smoothing the edges.

Hey thats cool man, I remember that game. There were some monsters in that which would look good sculpted, and the dudes in their armour and stuff too. Are you gonna do the armour for this weapon? this was the american type army huh?

Yeah, they were the Capitol army. I’m going to do a heavy infantry character holding the gun - http://www.princeaugust.ie/target_games/tg11440.html

The holes on the top barrel of the gun look really odd and have no pattern. I can’t tell if that is intentional or if you just got lazy and decided screw it.

The holes should have a pattern. I can’t tell if they are patterned on yor miniature or not, but if they aren’t then it’s bad gun design IMO.

I made a stenciled pattern for it. But I did not want it to look too ‘perfect’ either, so I kinda randomised it here and there. I wanted to give this model a hand drawn feel to it.

Really nice how that’s done. I thought it was all created in ZB, but then I read and it seem to be more involved. The meshes are really brokendown very nicely. Thanks for the updates.
