Scared Silly Entry by David Lyon

Hey everyone,

I’m scared silly myself to just attempt to enter this contest, seeing as I am a Z-noob, but I figure this will motivate me to play around more with the software. Plus, I have been drooling over the Cintiq for a looooong time, and a chance to win a free one is too much to pass up.

I have two concepts, and since people are coming up with such great ideas, I figured I would post before someone posted my idea first.

Concept 1: I’m still not sure about this once since it seems like an old joke. It would be Dr. Frankenstein and Igor at the side of the road. The car has broken down, so they have the creature hooked up to jumper cables. Adam (the monster) has a look of concentration on his face, Igor is looking over the hood toward Dr. F, and Frankenstein is sitting behind the driver’s seat looking frustrated as he tries to get the engine to start. I’m worried about sculpting the car, but otherwise it is a simple composition.

Concept 2: I got this idea after looking at the latest batch of costumes on Amazon.com. I pictured a boardroom full of classic movie monsters (Dracula, Wolfman, Frankenstein’s monster, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Mummy, Bride of Frank, etc.) all wearing business suits. Drac has a pointer and is waving it frantically at a presentation which is basically a broken-line graph that looks like Black Monday. The graph is titled “Monster Mask Sales” and is showing the decline in scary costumes. All the monsters are reacting appropriately. (I imagine Wolfman howling and crying, CFTBL putting some Alka Seltzer in a glass, etc.) Outside the window, you can see kids dressed as ballerinas, Harry Potter, or various super heroes. These would have to be very generic so as not to infringe on copyrighted characters, plus this scene would have a TON of characters and I don’t know if I could pull it off in time.

Concept sketches to follow soon!

Anyway, I’d appreciate some pros/cons from people regarding these ideas. I would use ZBrush for everything, although I do have a registered copy of Maya if I needed it to create a base mesh or something.

Everyone else has some awesome ideas. I look forward to seeing everyone’s work!

I like the first idea best, but for a first-timer, that’s going to be a hefty job. I guess the only way to learn is to dive right in. One way or the other, this will be a good way to de-noob yourself lol.

I like the first idea best also.

I feel your pain about being new. I’ve had ZBrush for a while but have had no time so I’m forcing myself to do a finished work for this. Happy Z-ing

Hi all,

This is the base “toony” mesh that I plan on using for all the characters, just adapting it to fit their individual size and feel. Please note that I gave them cartoon mitten hands because I’m still pretty new to ZSpheres.

I also did some posing to create a basic “Igor” which I will begin sculpting later tonight or tomorrow.

Crits are welcome, but please be gentle. This is only like my 4th sculpt in ZBrush.
