Scan clean up - 'Zbrush executable has stopped working'

Hey,

I’m working on an import of a scan (OBJ file). As it is I have got to close a lot of holes as areas of the scan are missing (top of head and bicep area). The raw scan is give or take 3.5 million polygons and I fear this may be a leading cause in the problem I am having.

I am trying to fill these holes and get rid of mesh debris around the sculpt. I am struggling to find an efficient way of doing so without losing what detail there is in the scan. What I have tried is:

  • Insert sphere(s) in new subtool > shape sphere(s) to fill the hole(s) and then try dynamesh to connect these subtools, I think I merged the subtools with the scan before this. This results in program crashing with the message - zbrush executable has stopped working
  • Dynamesh raw scan > close holes > ERROR zbrush executable has stopped working
  • Decimation Master (not totally familiar with this way though), got it to around 1.5 mill polys and tried the above, still crashed.
  • Insert spheres to fill holes then tried Zremeshing by drawing on my guided topology lines however the spheres a still seperate from the scan and have different meshes.

I am all out of ideas of how to tackle this scan. Could anyone give me any guidance on why my Zbrush is getting the message ‘zbrush executable has stopped working’. I don’t know if this is to do with how many polys the scan has or something to do with the computer etc.

Is there a simple method I am missing here to fill these holes and make one mesh that would avoid this error message?

Cheers

dupe your mesh. It is a reference, not a working mesh.

zremesh it down to a reasonable resolution (100k or so probably)
close all the holes on this mesh. either use zmodeler or the close holes function
zremesh the manifold mesh.

subD the low fixed mesh 1x and project. Clean up projection errors.
subD 1x again, clean up.
repeat until you’re happy with the results

Thanks for the quick reply man, I’ll give that a go tomorrow when I’m back at work and have access to the scan. Cross fingers this works.

Ill post back here again once I have given that a go, I feel like when I previously zremeshed and closed holes things went a bit haywire, however, ill follow your steps and see if I have any luck. I may be back with more questions - thank you!

Sorry for such a late response but I can confirm that your method worked and the scan is near completion, thanks very much!
