Scaling pressure intensity

When sculpting with the standard brush, I find that I rarely have my ZAdd above 15, and never above 20. For the majority of the time, I am in the 5-10 range.

Is the a way to scale the intensity of ZAdd to allow for a greater gradation of value? Meaning, I would like to scale the standard brush’s default range of 0-20 to fit 0-100.

Thanks!

Assuming you are using a drawing tablet you can increase Preferences > Tablet > Z Sensitivity to get a slightly greater range. Greater is probably the wrong word as the pen input is simply more sensitive.

The number of pressure levels your drawing tablet supports will of course decide the range for you.

Setting your drawing tablet driver sensitivity a bit lower should force you to press harder with the pen and together with Preferences > Tablet > Z Sensitivity you should be able to find a sweet spot that will allow you to work at higher Z Intensity values.

I was afraid of that. I did try messing with those settings, but really I want the scaling to be different from tool to tool, and not global across the toolbox. And I suppose changing my wacom driver would make the change universal across all apps, which is undesireable.

Well, thanks for the response. Not sure where to go next…

If you find a higher Preferences > Tablet > Z Sensitivity value works for you I suppose you could create macros that set the value for each brush. The macro buttons would of course replace the default brush buttons.

Depending on which Wacom you have you can set tablet properties on a per application basis.

Personally I leave the ZBrush tablet preferences as they are and tweak the wacom properties to my liking (and mood, low pressure sensitivity for those angry days  )

Great suggestions, thanks. The macro/custom brush button idea is an interesting one, though I couldn’t really see any difference in the stroke after when changing the Z Sensitivity. I’ll play around with it some more.

I am unfamiliar with ZBrush macros and the nature of the UI. Would you expect that I would have to replace every instance of the brush button in the UI? For example, the standard brush button shows up in the Quick menu, the tool trays, the menus, etc. Are they all instances of the same command, or unique?
