Saving matcap texture?

How do I save out the matcap texture file? For example if matcap skino6, there is a texture called “RGBGrab40”. Is it possible to save this texture out? I had search the zbrush directory but i cant finish it… Pls help…

Drop a subdivided polysphere on the canvas (sized to how big you want the texture to be) with the desired MatCap material assigned to it.

Play with Material modifier settings until it looks like what you want.

Then use the MRGBZGrabber tool to capture it. This usually gives you a texture that is essentially the equivalent of the original matcap texture file. Save the texture in the normal way.

If the original MatCap texture is twin spheres, you can get that in two Grabs. For the left one, set Intensity A to one, Intensity B to 0 and Cavity transition to -1. For the right one, set Intensity A to 0, Intensity B to 1 and Cavity transition to 1.

A trick I learned from Ryan… after capturing the left sphere as a texture, adjust for the right sphere settings, then with the texture you’ve already captured still active hold down the control key and do a second grab. The right sphere will be properly captured and attached to the left. Save your new texture.

Another way that might be useful for some things is to set Preferences:Quick Info:Preview Icon Size to 20, then mouse over the Material texture (it helps if the Material palette is open in the left or right tray for this). The pop up will not necessarily be the size of the original texture but a screen grab will give you something to work with.

oh WOw! That’s great~ thanks for the tutorial Svengali & marcus_civis. Problem solved
