Santasaurus and the Eight Tiny Pterosaurs

My first post, though I have lurked here since 2013! I am primarily interested in using zBrush for illustration. From 1985-2016, I worked as a steel sculptor, but my work before that was tight figurative stuff for miniatures collectors and gift ware companies. Later, I wound up selling to about 100 galleries across the US. There were very few certified welders who could also do figurative art, so my work prospered for a number of years. I intend posting pictures of the original steel work along with how it was recreated in zBrush. This one, though, was all in zBrush.

Santasaurus and the Eight Tiny Pterosaurs

A concept with an illustration

By Joel Haas

B.C. stands for “Before Christmas.”

Each year, Santasaurus would sally forth in a sleigh pulled by Eight Tiny Pterosaurs. The lead pterosaur was Randolph, the Red Nosed Pterosaur. The eight tiny pterosaurs had no collars –the reins were harnessed to them by magic and they flew by willing suspension of disbelief.

What sort of presents would Santasaurus bring? Gummi Rexes? An early Apple product, the “iSore”? Candy ferns? Barbieraptors? G.I. Jurassic?

If coal had not yet formed, what did bad dinosaurs get? Copralytes or fossil wood?

It was really a moot point. Since dinosaurs had no houses, they had no chimneys.

So…

Each year Santasaurus returned to what was then the North Pole with a sleigh full of undelivered presents. This saved the expense of needing any dino elves.

Anyway, the Jurassic ended when Santasaurus, finally desperate for a chimney to land on, mistakenly flew into a smoking active volcano crater. Shortly thereafter, a giant meteorite hit the Earth creating New Orleans, Miami, and Cozumel.

The dinosaurs could not afford any of these places and were forced into Key West. They finally disappeared when even Key West got too expensive.

I created 3D models of the sleigh, Santasaurus and the pterosaurs (Ptiffany, Ptimothy, Pthomas, etc) and used screen captures once I had the angles of view I wanted, I combined it all in PhotoShop

Saddened to read that the dinosaurs fell prey to gentrification.

Might I be so bold Good Sir to ask why screen grab and not render out from ZBrush?

these were screen grabs from zBrush rendering. Further flaws may be attributed to my ignorance of the zBrush finer points. Anybody who thinks gentrification has driven dinos too close to extinction is welcome to write me off list for a copy of “The Little Boy Who Cried ‘Dinosaur!’”
On a personal note, I am honored and flattered you even noticed or commented on my work since you have been and are one of my very few favorite artists on zBrush Central.
