Samsung slate for zBrush????

Hi everyone,

maybe someone could help me:

Does anyone knows if the Samsung Slate (http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/tablet-pcs/XE700T1A-A03US-specs) ist able to run zBrush in an acceptable way? I’m not sure because of the graphics, it’s the integrated Intel HD 3000… ?

Thanks for any advice

Daniela

It does meet ZBrush’s minimum system requirements. http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/system/

ZBrush doesn’t use your graphics card, so that is a non-issue. The only challenge I see is the display resolution. At 768 height you will find yourself doing a lot of vertical scrolling through palettes.

Hi Aurick,

if the resolution is the only limitation this slate seems to be perfect to take around all the time -because it is very small and lightweight and has a long lasting battery life. Who won’t work at the beach?

Thank you for your fast answer

I have this slate in case anyone has questions.

You definitely want to customize things as much as possible. The widescreen display format makes it a bit unfriendly for artists even though it has all of the features. The Asus slate is a much better screen ratio but with lesser technical specs and bulkier. I also upgraded to a two button stylus that is compatible. It’s not perfect but I’m happy with it.

The lack of art tools out there in this mobile market blows my mind. I’m not talking about finger painting toys, there’s plenty of that crap.

I’m still hesitating…
It’s annoying, cause Samsung makes really interesting things, but their quality has not the best reputation, problems (as hardware-recognition) coming up after short time of use… I had several problems with a Samsung Note which I bought from Amazon, had to change it and the new one shows technical problems , too. Talked to the Amazon Hotline, they said that problems with Samsung-products aren’t seldom… The Slate seems to be quiet interesting, but I really don’t want to have the same silly problems as with the Note.

Artraven, how long do you have the Slate and are you satisfied with quality and reliability?

Does anyone know what the battery life is for the Samsung? It doesn’t say on their website. Asus has a similar slate (EP121 IIRC) but it’s battery life is only 2 hours or so. I’ve been wanting to buy one of these as a gift for my spouse but that one thing keeps making me hesitate.

Hi Zeddicus,

the Samsung Slate has far better battery live than the Asus ep121, depending on what you’re doing with it it could last about 6 hours or more.

I can validate that as well.

My Slate is problem free. I had read that there were some issues with earlier builds but everything has seemed to be fixed with the newer builds. This product isn’t designed for artists so it’s not perfect. It just happens to be one of the first devices that we as artists can functionally use. I had to do a lot of research to get the right two button stylus and the driver to work plus an “Art Dock” script where I almost don’t have to use the keyboard (although I’m comfortable with the muscle memory and the keyboard). My current set up has a driver conflict between Sketch Book Pro and ZBrush so I have to enable and disable a service in order for one or the other to have pressure sensitivity.

Again, it’s not perfect (at least my set up) but it is a great device and practically your only choice (or very few) if you’re in the market for a professional mobile artist tool.

Definitely going to buy the Samsung then. Thanks for the replies, very much appreciated! Now to figure who sells them around here lol.

@Zeddicus: Congrats! I’m sure your husband will like it
Decided to buy one, too, because of it’s small size, less weight and long battery live it is perfect to carry around all the time - sitting in a little cafe at the beach and be able to sketch and doodle…hmm:D:D:D

@Arthaven: Did you test this Artdock http://konartist3d.deviantart.com/art/ArtDock-283342420? ? Made by someone who uses the Slate with zBrush, too, seems to be really interesting!

Yes vaju, that is the Art Dock that I have. It’s very useful. I would like to customize it differently but don’t have the time or energy to learn how to. It works just fine.
