This is cool! Did you use the new Curve Alpha feature as a starting point?

No, I made this model just before the curve alpha feature came out.
I used the curve tube brush as a base, then I inserted everything by creating curve brushes and playing with the ZModeler and Frame mesh with the creased edges.
