Rough polygroup border from mask

I have a sword sheat as base mesh, and I am sulpting the ornamentation with the help of masks. I want create polygroups from the masks, so that I can set seperated materials in the Blender. The material colours of the polygroups should get clear different colours, so that I can bake the ID Colour map from the highpoly to the lowpoly model later.

The mask has a smooth border like the polygons all around. But if I press the button “Polygroups->Group Masked Clear Mask”, I get a polygroup with a rough border. Its follow badly the mask shape.

How can I smooth the polygroup border? Is the divide of the geometry the only way?

Polygroups follow the geometry exactly so the definition will depend on the resolution of the mesh. But also, be careful if you are moving up and down subdivision levels because that can change polygroups that have been created at the highest level. This is because the low resolution can’t support the detail. Ideally polygroups should be created at the lowest level.

Hi marcus,

Ok, I did not created the polygroups at the lowest subdivision level. I think, The borders of the ornamentation would are to rough. The problem is, I did not change the subdivision level. I saved only the file, and after that the border was rougher as before the saving (green=before saving; blue=after saving).

Sorry, so it is exactly: After the saving and then open the saved file.

That’s because the file is automatically saved at the lowest subdivision level. I’m not familiar with your options in Blender but you may be able to work with two versions of your model, one which is high resolution only so that the polygroups are preserved.
