Rocks and Cliffs

I’m sculpting a huge landscape that has a massive amount of cliffs. The given is that I’m a beginner at zbrush and only know the “basics”. Has anyone found a great method for creating convincing cliff’s? maybe and link to a great site for rock stamps or alpha’s used. Any help would be appreciated.

The first question to ask is: do you plan to use the cliffs as part of a ZBrush scene, or to export them to another program?

If in ZBrush, then you can use techniques like here and here.

If in another app, you might try something like this.

great. thanks for the links! some interesting stuff. the end result will be a scene in Maya. I’m currently building all my rock stamps in photoshop and using them in zbrush. I wasn’t sure if there was another way to create quick rock textures using deformations or another tool in zbrush. Thanks again for your help.

Can you show us some imagery? I know of several techniques that might help you out.

this is kinda where I’m going with it. although it’s not quite what i want. these are suppose to be cliffs or bluffs along a beach.

Ah Aurick

It takes a lot to dig out your old master pieces… man take out some time for more of those illustration stuff…

Northboy check out the alpha terrain zscript in the help menu of zbrush, I use only that technique to generate all the base model of my cliffs and mountains even ground with different levels of deformation then a little sculpt here and there finishes the work

Its just you need to work a bit to create the right alpha map(bird view manner) for right outcome and it can be very close to what you ahve visualized…

NorthBoy, how about showing us an image or 3 you are going for? That will help provide suggestions better than showing what you have that is not to your liking.

On the main gallery page, some pretty good examples exist, way down near the bottom is a technique for pebbles, nudge, nudge, hint, hint…

Of course that isn’t the whole solution, but if you can’t communicate to us what you are trying to do, it’s really going to be hard to help.

This is some reference I’m following for the “rocky” look. The other areas are going to be more heavy eroded like a sandtone. thanks for all the help!

OK perhaps this scan help, I used your supplied image, and a simple plane as polymesh. After this script runs, you can subdivide and do more deatil following the same procedures. Then you paint with textures for real detail, see the video on Zbrush site (they paint a person). The script will ask you for the image - last one.

you rock! (no pun intended) Great method for working!! very cool stuff to start in zbrush. Going to give’r a try now. Thanks again:D
