Roach Puppet

Wow. Hilarious. My first thread I think or I totally forgot how to post anything.

Yes. I am a lurker.

I am working on a short film where I though I might experiment a bit. I used zbrush to prepare a 3d model and 3d print the pieces in order to be articulated and rod controlled. The result was much like a more complicated muppet.

I had to print about 12 versions of the head and violin in order to test the articulation and the magnet connections (all head and wings were magnetized in order to be switched and positioned)

All puppeteering points were also magnetized in order for the puppet to be versatile. VFX were concerned about rotoscoping out all of the rods that crossed the puppet’s body.

This model was originally suppose to be a realistic roach but production changed it to a more stylized version.

Sorry about the quality of images. The last ones were taken as I was running back and forth to set.

I also want to give props to John at Moddler and Dave at Growit3d for helping me get my head around this.

Amazing work and those prints are huge !!! How long did it take for you to put this little guy together ?

Thanks for sharing

That’s awesome!! I would love to see it animated.

Jaa, fun fun fun fun fun fun

There was 3 versions the one you see and two others. A 3 in. articulated lighting stand-in and 3 in. wheeled versions (like a little roach hot wheel car).

The puppet was 12" with his legs slightly bent. The 3" versions took a day to print on a polyjet. I wanted to have John at Moddler do it since we have such a great relationship and his work for me has been outstanding but the production had added some delays that we had to work around. Growit3d ended up printing them. They ended up coming out great too. They also printed the 12" parts on a zcorp printer which came out great too. I think those parts printed in a day too. Zcorp prints are very fast. All the prototype heads, violins, and arms were done on my in house printer which is an older zcorp printer that I have modified. (i love that machine  )

I find it cool to see how parts from different bureaus come out slightly different with their own special qualities. I lean toward Moddler for objet parts and Growit3d for zcorp parts. IMHO

I recently saw a “teaser” for your film on a 3D blogg, great work! :+1:

which blog would that be? I dont think there is an edit together yet.
