Riddick - Rule the Dark

Hi guys!

I just entered the “Riddick - Rule the Dark” competition on DeviantArt. This competition has been a crazy one!

I had a little less than two weeks. I started off wanting to do a strong, action scene and had made at least 7-8 previous 3D scenes, characters and compositions. All of which I developed, none of which I liked…

I decided to go for this composition, which is different from a lot of the action-oriented entries I’ve seen. I guess I wanted to show that Riddick really isn’t too bothered by any of these strange creatures…seeing as he Rules the Dark. :stuck_out_tongue:

Here’s the main render:

Here a re a few WIP images (I’ll upload more soon!):

Everything was modeled in Zbrush, endered in 3ds MAX using Mental Ray, and comped in After Effects.

Here’s an alternate version of the main render that I made to look more like concept art/a painted piece.

I really loved working on this project!

Thanks very much! Yes, start to finish was less than two weeks. Everything you see was created from scratch (it had to be for the contest).

In terms of workflow, I had a few overall compositions in mind. I thumbnailed each of them out before I started working on Riddick’s mesh. After some development of the character’s basemesh, I posed him to match the thumbnails and I picked the one that I felt worked best.

After sticking with one of the poses and compositions, I set up a scene fairly quickly in 3ds MAX (with a camera and some basic lighting). That way I had a pretty solid idea of what the final output would be like. From thereon out it was just finishing up and detailing all of the assets needed for the scene.

I think the hardest part of the whole project (other than the tight deadline) was settling for an initial composition that I really liked
