Resolution from Spotlight and size of reference image on screen

I have been testing out spotlight to bring in some line art.

I have noticed that irrespective of polygon count of the mesh and the size of the reference image, what seems to have the most affect on creating smooth edges of the painted on image from spotlight, is the size of the reference image on the screen.

I thought this would have some relationship to document size, thinking that if I zoomed out on the document this would have the same affect as scaling the reference image on the screen, but it did not work that way.

So the only way I can get really smooth edges is to scale up my reference image on the screen so large that I cant fit all the line art in the reference image that i want to project onto my mesh with spotlight, on the screen.

I wish you could lock the reference image and the mesh and pan them together, this would solve my problem as I then could scale them both up and then paint what is on the screen and then pan what is off the screen into view and then paint that area of the image.

Any thoughts or advice on this ? Thanks.
