rendering layers

Hi all.
I did some tests about how to extract an ambient occlusion pass.
I know most of u might now these but i just wanted to share my settings(material & light)
 .

ao.jpg

A: Its the color(diffuse) pass, i used these setting and what i actually did was turn all mat properties off and leave ambient and diffuse to high values. Then just paint on top.

B: Ambient occlusion pass, its a white/gray pass.I paint with white color everything first and then I blend it with multiply mode in photoshop. I used for this one a lot of light rays so get a smooth result, its takes a while to render but the result is cool.
Theres is a thread from Meats Meier that has a cool material and its much faster to render ,u can try it as well.

C: Specular pass, its very simple just paint a total black color everything .
Screen mode for this layer in photoshop.

D: shadow pass, its again a white/grey pic, everything is painted with white color and it has high values in the material. Its something close to a shadow pass ,maybe the levels should be adjusted in photoshop (multiply blending mode).

All of these setting are not the best for each case.Just something to experiment with and have better results.

Thanks for viewing and i hope u find these useful.

Very nice information.

Just to let you know, there’s an even easier (and more accurate) way to get your color/diffuse pass: simply activate Render>Flat. This renders just the color without any material or shadow effects at all.

Here’s an example, based on your tutorial’s style:

[zbcimage.jpg](javascript:zb_insimg(‘15433’,‘zbcimage.jpg’,1,0))

The nice thing about this technique is that it gives you total control when it comes time to composite the renders in Photoshop, since ALL of the shading will be coming from your other renders.

Of course, this method won’t work when part of the color is coming from material properties like noise or color bump. But in that case it’s often still handy to have the Flat render for use in color adjustments.

Thanks for taking the time to post this Mr. Micro, I know it will help lots of folks.

I have been playing with my own sets of mat and light settings for render passes and will have to see if yours works better…probably does too!

Anyway thanks…will have to bookmark it for those asking about such things later on!

Excellent. :+1: Many thanks for taking the trouble to post this; very useful.

Tim Leydecker: thanx mate:)
aurick: :+1:
aminuts: thank u, i as said its not something standard but something to experiment with…the nice thing about layers is that u have more control on different elements of the image.
marcus_civis: no trouble at all friend:)

Bump & Thanks, this will be very helpfull to me! - Very simple, very effective!
