Render help (Maya question)

I was curious if anyone knew a way to render out a mesh with normals applied to it in Maya? I’ve tried software, hardware, and mental ray and every time it produces a render of the mesh as if it had a grayscale bump. Nasty looking.
The HQ render in viewport displays it correctly but how do you do a real render using normal maps?

nm, for whatever reason my hardware render wasn’t working at home but at work it renders it out just fine. So sorry for the post. :confused:
