Reduce Polygons of a specific area on the mesh

Hi everyone,

I have read many posts on here for reducing the polycount of a model/mesh. It appears there are other ways other than using decimation master to reduce the poly count. Basically I am going to end up baking the normal map of a high res version of the model into the low res. The problem I run into is no matter what I use wether it be decimation master in ZBrush or polygon reducers in 3DS MAX, it always changes the shape of the model which makes sense for obvious reasons. But I wanted to put a post out here so I could get feedback from the experts. Am I going about this the right way (btw, I am using DM and reducing the count by about 80 - 85%, so I am taking a 100K poly to about 17K)?

Any suggestions would defintely be appreciated.

Thanks!

Would like to know as well.

I’d retopologise your mesh to a lower res version. You can do this in zbrush or another 3d application.
For zbrush 4 there are is a series of video tutorials showing how to retoplogise starting here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28wpgyotYrg&feature=related
