RED HAT Fedora core 2 first impression (Depression)

Hi all!!!

Got Fedora 2 Linux , which is a project by both red hat and the Fedora comunity…

First off, before I go off ranting, I have a Real Oddball configuration for my old DELL system. I have sound max integrated sound (Intel), ATI Radon 9800 128mb GFX card, and a Intel based networking card… all of the above are what is called OEM versions, witch is really bad if you have to configure them with anything other than windows.

ANACONDA the installer ran great! it saw all my system without me having to tell it anything other than that I preferred English, and the usual password user name stuff…

this is the first Linux disturb that saw my sound system without me having to tweak the volume controls or install ALSA…
:+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: +

it is also the first Linux distro that saw that I had a OEM radon 9800 GFX card…
:+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: +

:small_blue_diamond: :small_blue_diamond: :small_blue_diamond: and here is the bad stuff :small_blue_diamond: :small_blue_diamond: :small_blue_diamond:

:-1: It found my graphics card but did not enable 3d acceleration. and the RPM’s from ATI don’t support the 2.6 Kernel!

:-1: I have been really spoiled with KNOPPIX, fedora comes very plain for the home user install… NO ABILITIES TO PLAY MP3 files, for that matter they removed all Mpeg codex!!! No ability to display GIFF files either… some Patent pending BS!

:-1: they have a way that the Linux user can directly install things to system from command line, Called APT-GET just like Debian the problem is that you have to manually install it and manually find all the other programs it depends on and install them one at a time… after the whole ordeal is done I find out that it is still half baked for fedora core 2 so I could not use GUI programs with APT-GET like Kpackage, and Synaptic.

:-1: Redhat and Fedora are famous for the RPM’s used to install things simply… yet in Fedora 2 RPM’s have nothing associated with them in GNOME or KDE, you have to do everything from command line.

OK Now for the Icing on the cake!

After spending all afternoon getting fedora to the point to where I can install my custom applications. I decided to take a break and to come and do some Zbrushing in my windows partition…

ANACONDA did not place my boot strap in the right partition (Never gives you a choice to custom install the boot loader), thus my windows NTSF system got totally CRUNCHED!!! not to mention that it made the Linux partition unuseable…

Sooooo I grabbed my trusty KNOPPIX cd and started over again, installing windows (6 hours getting all drivers, and installing applications/games), and installing Debian from KNOPPIX (20 minuets with all drivers and applications, KNOPPIX ROX!!!)

I got everything up and running, now all I have to do is wait till morning to contact people to ask permission to use my licence of Z2 again…

RED HAT, and FEDORA are not recomended for noobies IMHO! KNOPPIX ROCKS!!! Debian is by far my favorite flavor of Linux so far

I dont agree, im using w2k and fc2 with duelboot just perfect.

  1. Dont know how to fix that with your 3dcard it just needs time before updates are released

  2. You kan play mp3 wma and mpg files easy you just needed to downladed a plugin

  3. You need to install yum interface this is SOOOO easy you can find updates, plugins, apps and lots of more stuff with no problem and download and install them automaticly.

  4. –> configure file to open with RH package manager.

  5. Just stupid mistake.

ME LOVES FC2

All true except for the stupid mistake part… the installer dose not give choice where to place bootstrap…

I have talked to 2 other people with same problem, there is a command line switch for this, but that is unacceptable in my book…

I just got my new system yesterday, and I have Fedora Core 2 installed on it… Not because I like it, but because I have an ATI graphics card installed in it… ATI only distributed red hat/fedora RPMS, I am particular when it comes to graphics cards, I don’t like Nvidia… so it was either Fedora Core X86x64bit or SUsE 64 bit edition if I wanted to use RPM and have a 64bit OS …

Fedora was free…

Anyways, Everything can be worked around in fedora…

You can Download and install the MP3 Codex and the GIFF file codex also… it is a pain in the ass, but it is possible…

Dunno, I still like KNOPPIX and DEBIAN the best… it is the easiest and fastest installer from all the distros I have tried… Everything works right out of the box… everything is set up and tweaked the ways I like them, it is a more complete install of Linux IMHO…

I only wish that there was a way to exclude some of the applications that I wont use…

after knoppix install, all you have to do is type 2 commands and you have full security update, and and a full install of Debian “SID”

Yum is all-right I guess… I still prefer APT for my downloading/installing needs…

Dunno, I think Knoppix has spoiled me…

If there was a 64Bit version of Debian Linux I would have it installed right now

Red hat/Fedora are cool because everyone seems to make RPM’s before they cater to any other distro…

Debian can use alien to convert the RPM… but this is not the greatest idea with device drivers…

With the knoppix install of Debian I was cruising surfing the INTERNET, receiving e-mail, listening to INTERNET radio…’

With fedora, I had to spend entire afternoon looking for patches and workarounds, even then it was a pretty bare install…

Thanks for you opinion… I hope I get a batter opinion of fedora soon… 2nd day useing it and no network card support (knoppix partition recognised everything except graphics card automaticly)…
as soon as I get everything Ironed out it will be a nice system…
