Reconstruct Subdivision Fail

Hi, I’m following tutorials in the most recent book I can find: Pixologic Zbrush 2018 A Comprehensive Guide 5th Edition. It’s obvious that some of the things are outdated but I have trouble following videos and I needed a book.

In one project, I was asked to append with a Cylinder3D and then to Reconstruct Subdiv twice so that the cylinder has a lower number of sides. When I try I am given an error message “Mesh contains triangles: Operation Cancelled”

I’m pretty sure there is a way to do what is needed even if by a different method. Any help/suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you.

I’ve attached two screen shots.

SubD reconstruction will fail if it cant cleanly reduce to quads by a factor of 4 (usually because there are tris in the topology). Zbrush has much better options for this these days though.

Read the docs on the Gizmo functions, and its ability to quickly convert any subtool to a primitive. These primitives have controls where you can easily set how many x, y and z divisions you want.

Likewise, you could send your cylinder throughZRemesher at a target polycount. The new Zremesher does a good job creating clean topo for simple objects, and can be used to reduce polycount.

The Gizmos 3D totally worked and was easy. Thank you.
