really smooth surface

I have a hard surface that has to be very smooth, it will be shaded with some car paint like look.
now when I add some proportions, masses, using clay How the hell do I get the surface smoothed, killing every dent and bump?

with the smooth brush

Well I am fighting with it, but:
the smooth brush tends to take away a lot of volume when used on a bigger area, and it produces artifacts on very high resolutions (which would be neede to prevent problem a)

The surface is supposed to be as smooth as the “I Robot” face, f.e.

Lowering the Z Intensity value of the Smooth brush will help reduce the amount of volume that’s taken away.

If the Smooth brush is introducing artifacts, we’d need examples. Are they dimples? If so, are they happening where you have “star” intersections of five or more polygons sharing a single point?

I definitely say yes to the dimples on star intersections, but I am aware of them and usually fix ´em in fusion (do know no other way)
concerning the other artifact, this is happening on high subdlevels, having like 5 mio polygons.
see the pic, looks liek too low sampling. If this can be solved, it would let me finish my thingy on highres (would be GREAT!!!)

Try selecting the Smooth brush and then adjusting the Focal Shift slider.

Also try selecting an Alpha for the Smooth brush. From there you can also adjust the Alpha>Blur or Alpha>Rf (Radial Fade) settings.

You can also try different stroke types, such as FreeHand.

did some testing with all proposals you said, but none does solve the problem…
It can be brought to an acceptabel state using the one level beneath the maximum, but it is still visible. best approach so far is the extremly blurred alpha.

is this an perfomance issue? and: the star junction problem was also present in zbrush 2, is ther no mathematic way to prevent it?? (guess it is caused by the triangulation aroud thatarea an the resultuing high polycount compared to the rest…)

I further investigated the problem, and it seems to happen, if the polygon size crosses a certain size, I have a face with a littler higher resolution on the nose area.
I can smooth everything fine, except that nose, as soon as I enter the area those nasty brush artifacts come up…
