Re-Topolgy problem - Floating points not aligning

Hi,

Wondering if anyone can help me here. I create a mesh in Max and took it to Zbrush for some simple sculpting to then re-topologize and then do some heavy sculpting on.

But the re-topology points are not aligning to the mesh, they are floating off the surface and near the seam of the centre they are overlapping. ITs making it impossible for me to retopologize it. I have tried exporting the hight res mesh into max and re-importing but it makes no difference. I have also tried it in 3.1 and 3.5r3 and althought they dont do the same thing they still both do not align to the surface.

Any clues?

HI Can anyone help? im desperate for some help on this. I saw no replies this morning so I decided maybe it was to do with the mesh coming out of max.

So i modelled the objext from a Zbrush polysphere, then went to retopology and it does exactly the same thing. I have used the re-topology on several other models and not had this problem. But its even worse now.

Has anyone got any pointers? are there some hidden settings im not utilizing?

Got a screenshot?

retop points float on the surface they don’t snap.
when approaching the seam work from the center line outwards, never inwards, this is probably whats happening.
clear mask often, its very easy for points to get masked and they will look connected but aren’t.
could your issue be a scale problem? how big is your model in the tool: preview window.
sometimes symmetry won’t work if you use too small of a draw size.
hope some of that helps.

I understand that they float, but they are not even floating a little close to the surface, they are floating inside the mesh, outside the mesh and all over the place.

None of them are masked so its not that problem. I have tried from the centre line outwards and its still not working. It just seems like it not taking the actual surface of the model into account at all. It kind of does but then snaps the point nowhere near it on one plane.

But maybe its a scale issue, ill try making it much larger in scale and going again.

I would like to add, i have used Zbrush to retopologize my models on several occasions and never had this problem before.

Thanks for the replies.

I tried scaling it to a large size. The first point will lie roughly on the surface but the subsequent points will float quite a way off the surface. Also when i go to snap new joints i have to point the cursor away from the actual point for it to pick it up.

So its not just being a problem in doing the actual surface its also making it hard to just put any points down at all.

The weird thing is that the cursor follows the surface perfectly but then the point just does not go down where the click hits.

Are you trying to retopo with perspective on? That doesnt work reliably, and can cause the types of “floating” points you describe.

ok it seems the problem is sorted.

A freind at work suggested not working in Perspective view. I did not think this was a problem but tried it anyway. Now its all snapping where I want it to and how i want it to.

I did not realise that this could cause a problem. You lives and you learn.

Thanks so much to all those replies, seems funny that someone who does not even know Zbrush told me to try something obvious that could be causing the problem when i was looking for all manner of complicated reasons why it was not working.

Thanks again to the replies.

Thanks, for this. I got the answer but appreciate that you would have helped me resolve it. like i said earlier, dont loads of retop in Zbrush and never had this problem and i used perspective view indiscrimanantly.

Now i know better!

Anyway, thanks again for posting.

glad you got it sorted, and i learned something too, didn’t know about that perspective issue.
