Question on Hardware Specs

Hello ZBrushCentral forum-ers.

I’ve recently been trying to piece together or purchase a pre-built computer with the intent to use ZBrush, a variety of Adobe software, and either 3DS Max or Maya and was hoping for some additional input from current users on what they use for ZBrush and high-end renders. The part I’m having the most issue with is concerning the graphics card; namely workstation card vs. consumer (gaming) cards. I know ZBrush doesn’t do too much with the Graphics card but mainly depends on the amount of RAM and power of the CPU, I’m a bit more curious on how well a consumer card would work with 3D modeling programs such as Maya. Granted they are not made specifically for 3D work, I don’t have a large budget to work with (at $2,200), so if I can make them work well with a cheaper card that would be preferable.

So far from my reading the workstation cards are built specifically for the heavier work load and are much more stable since this is what they are built for but the price is a bit steep. It also seems, at least for nVidia cards, the core architecture is pretty much the same.

At this point in time I would consider myself a hobbyist in 3D modeling/animation since I’m not actually making money off it and don’t foresee that at least in the next 3 years.

Input and suggestions are welcome.

Thanks in advance,

If you’re doing it professionally I would recommend a workstation card (even if they are a bit overpriced). However with a limited budget and being in the hobbyist level I would probably go with a consumer card.

Was doing a search and chanced upon your question.
May I ask what you finally decided.
Thank you
