Question for 3Ds Max users. Viewport Background and Reference Images

I am a Max Noob I guess you can say. I know Maya pretty well but I want access to a few more modeling and rendering tools so I am trying to learn Max as well. One thing that I have been quite annoyed with was that in Maya if your reference images are a bit off you can align them.

1 I have tried in Max to use Viewport Background I did Lock zoom/pan and display image as well as Match bitmap…the image of the head reference 1.JPG
The image came in this way…not centered. I tried turning Lock zoom/pan off and align the head to the center of the grid and then hit lock zoom/pan and it went back to where it started out…

2 I tried the old fashioned way of using planes and applying the image as a bitmap. I started modeling but quickly got confused do to I can’t see the reference behind the mesh. I found a way to turn on wireframe Mode but that also effected the reference image as it is a plane. i turned on highlights and edge faces + Xray mode…I would model this way but it quickly got confusing and hard to tell what is the mesh and what is the background plane

Is there a versatile and not annoying way in Max to set up reference images…This is one of the things that is preventing me from enjoying Max as much as Maya.

Any Help or advice is appreciated.

I would ask people in a Max Forum.

Do like you were w/ the planes, and just adjust slightly the opacity on the material, such that you can still see the ref. image but you can also see through it. Also can adjust opacity of the material on the object your are modeling (if you need to see through to reference behind it).

Leave the viewports’ general display as smooth/shaded, but in the configuration (the plus sign near other vp settings -> configure) set “display selected with edged faces”. This will show the wire only for the object you are working on.

awesome it works  thanks a lot for your help
