Question: Billing Rate for a Freelance Job.

Hey Guys,

I got some e-mail asking about a freelance job. Both are sculpting Job, they gave me their own concepts and specification. One is like a Gundam model, and the other one is like somesort of G.I Joe female character. I guess both are for 3D printing. How much am I going to bill them, as project based.

I think, I should pursue freelancing for now since the game dev industry in the Philippines is so let says on an infant stage right now.

Thanks

I charge around 35 dollars an hour. but I’ve gone as high as 75 dollars and hour for design jobs only. For some reason graphic design pays more than 3d modeling. But yeah, not long ago I had a contract for modeling motorcycle wheels to be manufactured, I cant say the name or any other detail.
I charged 35 dollars an hour but it ended costing him around 1200 so I capted it at 750 for each design plus model. I still have 5 designs more to do to finish up their new line of wheels.
But I have experience and contacts and my job was sought after by these people, I cant say you can put your price that high at the moment if you’re to freelancing.

but yeah, again graphic design jobs (even really crappy designers) charge around 35 dollars an hour (but it can go up to 75 and they are usually 12 hour contracts), I just translated that into my 3d modeling by evaluating my precious time… it sounds ****y but you have to be like that, I didn’t want to I honestly was taught my worth by my boyfriend who is an experienced programmer and has worked with many designers before.
So there you go that’s just my personal experience not research. You dont want to price yourself out of a job too you know, as I said I capped the wheel rim design and modeling contract for that company at 750 per wheel and miscellaneous things (as pulleys and calipers)

It greatly depends on your location and experience. Have much are you charging for your regular job by the way?

Anyway, maybe you can use this as reference: https://www.staff.com/skill/3d+Modeling

These are 3D modeling experts who are working remotely for full time. You could maybe get an average and use that rate as yours.

I get it now. thanksSome follow up question. the question before came because somebody ask me to do a freelance job. This time if I want to “look” for a freelance job as 3D Character Artist, where will I go? any avenue? And a favor I want to ask, could you check on my gallery if my artwork pass as a professionally done, or if I need to improve at certain areas. Or need to learn to do other stuff. Thanks

If you’re a US citizen and pro for a number of years I wouldn’t go under 50$ per hour, and if you’re say a european like I somewhere between 20-30$ per hours will work. The reason for this difference is from my experience that US employers who have a tight budget outsource to countries outside of the US because these countries are poorer, so both parties are happy.

hAHA! I’m from asia what do you think will be the rate?. where do you think I could find a freelance job. There are a couple of hobbyist that ask me to create a character for theme. But after those I don’t know where I could find a job. Any Idea?

There’s no reason why you can’t earn around $50/ hour. It is based on the quality of your work, not your location.

Good luck.

I get the hourly rate now. I have a fair rate in my mind just to get clients in. Thanks

Now here is the next thing. The jobs that I have at the moment found me, now what if I want to find projects?, where can I go?
