Prophet Velen

After practically devouring the Art of Blizzard art book my wife gave me for Christmas, I fell in love with Wei Wang’s beautiful concept painting for the Warcraft character Prophet Velen. As an homage to this, I set out to create my own realistic CG version of it. Sculpted in Zbrush, textured in MARI and rendered in Maya (Arnold).

While the sculpting went pretty quickly, with Zbrush being so great and all, the vast amount of texture painting, shader setup and hair system tweaking took considerably longer. For anyone interested I’ve got more progress shots from this project on my site.

I roughed in the beard and hair in Zbrush first, as I find it much more effective to solve shape and flow questions in sculpt rather than directly in the hair curves.
The hair system guide curves were then painted directly onto this mesh in Maya.
