Projection Master Noise, Speckles and Problems

When using Projection Master to texture or deform a model, I’m getting a lot of noise and speckles in the results (if it’s just colors), and also odd cracks and distortions in the model (if deformation is on). Why is this, and what can I do to prevent or limit it?

Here is an example of the texture problems I’m seeing. I paint a smooth image onto the model, pick it up, and little speckles appear on the model. This is not near the edges or anything, but right in the center. The texture looks like this:

As you can see, what was smooth now has a bunch of noise in it, which is clearly visible on the model. This really isn’t satisfactory at all! And I don’t see this happening to other people in the videos and things I’ve watched.

The model cracking is less objectionable, because it can be smoothed back mostly, but it still annoys me. I’ll pick up a model from the projection master and find that various parts have become distorted, with some kind of visible crack-like area. Smoothing puts the crack back together ok, but also removes some of the detail in that area.

Here’s an example, I’ve circled the distorted areas:

How can I get around these two problems? They really reduce the value of the projection master.

Janthin,

From my experience and from watching the Aaron Sims video, Detailing Characters: ZBrush Alpha Library, this problem most often occurs when geometry is behind or overlapped by the geometry that you are working on. To counter it you can carefully position your geo before going into PM, so that nothing is directly behind it. Alternately you can also hide the geometry behind (although I still get some artifacting this way, but not as bad.) the stuff you are working on. You could also try masking those areas out.

I hope this helps…
