Projecting a mesh on another mesh

Is it possible to project a mesh onto another mesh without using alphas, in such a way that the projected mesh follows the shape of the other mesh?
The reason for not using alphas is the decrease in resolution of the projected mesh and that they deform the projected mesh too much.

I’ve searched all over for a solution to this… anyone?

If you have two separate meshes already, you’d simply make one a subtool of the other and then use the ZProject brush.

I’m not understanding what you’re talking about with using alphas for projection. Do you mean that you’re creating a displacement map and then using that map on the other mesh? Your description just doesn’t give enough info.

Thanks aurick and my apologies for giving a vague description. Here’s my problem:

Let’s say that the base mesh that I’m working on is a sphere. On this sphere I would like to paint a face that comes out of the sphere, only I don’t want it to come straight out of the sphere in a symetrical way, I want it to look like it is spherized on its way out. For the face I have a separate mesh that I want to use.

One way to do this would be to make an alpha of the face mesh and paint it on the sphere using draw rectangle. But most of the detail of the face would get lost this way and I would get a very flattened version.
If I on the other hand use the ZProject brush the details of the face is kept, but so is its straight symmetry.

The technique that I’m searching for would be sort of like a mix between using an alpha brush and the ZProject brush, in which I could control the blend between the shapes, i e how much the face would deform to adapt to the sphere. Of course I could use the transpose tool to bend the face prior to using the ZProject brush, but in this case I need to do this many, many times with various meshes so it would not be convenient.

In the attached image I use an alpha to project the Zbrush standard face tool onto a sphere to illustrate the problem.

Any ideas?

i think you could get the control you want using layers and morph targets and the morph brush.
also try using the Projectall button in the subtool palette if you don’t like zproject.

Thanks a lot spaceboy, I’ll try this
