project moebius

as Pilou said it would take 5 minutes to do a moebius-strip i gave it a try (for much longer time :D):

i doubt thats close to a moebius-strip, but it was big fun, anyway. like monkeyfarm i now doubt theres a way to do it properly within z, but would love to be proven wrong :stuck_out_tongue:

basically i started off with an antique pre-spiral and helix-tool-days method of rotating a 3d-ring (with adjusted radius) by x-90 and applying negative twists a few times, smoothing in between. with mask all + col + sel32 it was easy to move half of the ring to where i wrongly thought it appropriate. coloring was done via select>mask all> row, then inverted. it is also a first attempt at using boozy’s cyclorama-tip

the other one is a selfportrait on the moebius-trip

any comments would be mucho appreciated, but even more so your own attempts at moebius-ing and findings

Hi Juandel
Beautiful try
Here my 30 secondes trying
Each Single Color is a Moebius Ribbon !

Ok I agree it’s a little trick
Just twist 360 the tore
It’s not a real 3D moebius but each colors yes
Pilou
Ps I shall try to make better
Ps ALAS It’s not a Moebius
 see demonstration below in the thread !

Well, whether it’s a proper moebius or not, both look cool!

For my moebius experiment, I tried to copy what I would do if it were made out of paper. Here are the steps:

  1. Select Plane3D and set its HDiv/VDiv to 32/8.
  2. Deform it with Size-Y to about -90.
  3. Rotate it in the Preview window so that one of the short edges faces you. (Use shift to snap it.)
  4. Deform it with Twist at 100.
  5. Rotate it so that it stands verticaly in the Preview window. At the top and bottom the twisted ends should point alond the Z axis so that in the Preview window they appear to fade into nothing.
  6. Deform it with SBend at 100.
  7. Turn on Z symmetry, set Draw Size to 1, select Edit Object/Move, and drag the eight pairs of points closer to the center of the object to make the seam less obvious.

The image:

Have to stick my two cents in here.I like Hansl’s the best so far.

Hi Rhom
I no doubt that you don’t know this
Alas it’s not Zb and it’s not by me

And don’t miss Maurits Cornelis Escher the big master untouchable!
Pilou

Of course I know of this image-I doubt there are very many people who consider themselves artist who do not know of Escher’s incredible images.I have long admired his work. What I posted here I felt was such an obvious albeit blatant takeoff (3d computer update)on his Moebius image I did not see the need to even refer to the masters work.Apparently you thought otherwise.Thankyou for correcting me.

Hi Rhom
It’s not a vital ā€œneedā€ to refer a great master
It’s just the opportunity to come to know some incredible paintings to the people who have no time or are in another community!
And it’s not incredible to think that some people in the past have took their brushes and create staggering pictures like Bosch or Brueghel : They had no electricity, movies, computers,Net… etc and they have making masterpieces of visual Art ! They have the same will to dream than today !
Don’t take offence if I give a link about this guys
I think that the Net must be useful to grow the connoisance and knowledge !
For example do you know the Aboriginal painting of Australia ?
Absolutly fascinating !
With the net in five minutes you can see it !
We must to take this adventage now before some dark future
We are in a sort of ā€œage d’orā€ so Surfing and enjoy with the help of this incredible machine the computer !
Do you think that I am too proselyte ?
Have a good time
Pilou
Ps I shall give the links in some times

LOL! i have a print of this Escher on the inside of my toilets door attached in a height so i am forced to meditate over recycling issues whenever i produce crap - which happens on an everday schedule  sorry for being so explicit, but thats the plain truth

great contributions everyone! :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: Pilou: your rainbows reminded me of the initialize>twist>settings of the 3d-ring and made me wonder if thats what i might have been missing (but tonites experiments were ead-ends) Muvlo: i think thats the kernel of moebiusstrips. rhom: see above

  • juandel

No offense taken Frenchy-You were right to post the link-for some reason in my little mind I just think everyone has seen Escher-or Yves Tanguy-who happens to be on of my all time favorites-If my response sounded offended it was not.The images did not belong
here.

Ring3D looks like it should work, but no. An anomaly leaves a small gap at 120 and 240 degree twist.

These look mobius, but they aren’t… each is a multiple of a 360 degree twist.

Hi Rhom
Absolutly no problemo
And thx for the 2 elaborate dedicaced images

Hi Svengali
You right a ā€œtwistā€ is not a ā€œreturnā€
A moebius is a volume with just one surface and just one side !!!
It’s his great caracteristic

If we remove one color of my rainbow tore : this color will be a real Moebius Ribbon : It’s topology
Here Muvlo has made a real Moebius but flat
The problem is the ā€œreturnā€ of the volume 3D
The research continue
Pilou

Links as promised
Hyeronimus Bosch
Piieter brueghel
Aboriginal painting
have fun !
Pilou
ps juandel You right it’s this Initialize
Else i can’t made this in 30 Secondes

Well, I couldn’t resist joining in on the fun with this one, myself.

Apologies for the crude modelling and hurray for unified skinning!

With a little more time I’m sure you could add more zspheres to make a proper strip or a beautiful cubic skinned cage like Escher’s.

Frenchy: 5 minutes realized (after a little longer thinking)!

Hi Bone
Great to see that you can make a Moebius with the Zspheres !
Precision : a Moebius can’t have 2 continue colors on his single face whithout seam :)(on the lengthwise of course and not juxtaposed
Pilou
Ps Some try (each 30 seconds but not realy Moebius 3D)

Hi Aurick
Your Yellow form is a twist or a realy Moebius ? Nice colors indeed for the others
Maybe Pixo has a luminous solution

here is mine :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue: :td:

looks awfull… I know…
made from a unified skin which was made from another, cubical, unified skin, which was made from zspheres. well?

One more try. This is a real mobius loop - (extruded triangle, 120 degree rotate.)

Ring3d object again, tweaked three points to close the gap.

Finding a decent viewing angle that reveals the mobius curve is almost impossible!

wow that is really cool svengali.way to go.

Hi Swengali
You approach the top  Bravo !
Maybe with a transparente Texture (as in my last try) we can see the entiere construction (ā€œdoubleā€ On in the Modifiers).
And with a rectangular section ?
Pilou
Ps an amazing thing : The third face is not visible
Pss Have you turn the model in the space for to be sure that is a real3D Moebius ?
Because I have had some bad surprise with the twist Ring3D ! See below !

Again 30 Seconds
It’s the demonstration of my firt try !
I think the more speedy, easy and tricky
Without gap, seam, and maybe some elegance
Alas, as Muvlo there is no thickness unlike the Escher Model and yes a little curvated !
Curvated is normal it’s a part of a torus
And Damned it’s not a Moebius
There are 2 faces !!!
So my first try was a spirit’s view and nobody have seen that
All is to revise
Maybe the next
Pilou
Thx to Zb for visualize hazardous hypothesis
Link with a beautiful Max Bill Moebius Scuplture and more
Another French Moebius
