Problems with ZBrush -> Xnormal -> Maya 2011 pipeline

Hello all,

I am quite new to both ZBrush and Maya, but I have been spending the last week straight watching tutorials and working on a few models. In the end, I'm hoping to be using ZBrush to create all of the detail for game models. Right now, I am working on a simple rock. I'm having trouble importing my textures and normal maps into Maya; they aren't working out quite how I would like. I'm to the point where I have been able to generate and use the object, color map, and normal map, but for some reason the texture map is stretched in places. Below, you can see where I have the textured, low res model in ZBrush open and then the same model imported into Maya with a texture map and bump map (using the normal map):

As you can see, in maya it looks great in some places, but in others the texture is stretched. Of course in zbrush it looks great all the time (for a low res). Why is this, and how can I fix it? Any help would be appreciated! Just so you know what I've done, I initially used Spotlight and polypaint to work the texture in, and then grabbed a 2048x2048 colormap from it using "New From Polypaint" with the highres model on, followed by clone and export texture to tiff. Exported the low and the high. Then I booted up xnormal and used it to generate the normal map (thanks to [a video by Anton Kozlov](http://www.antonkozlov.com/Tutorials/xNormal.html)). After that I just import into maya and attach the color map to color and normal map to bump. Thanks again! I love zbrush and I really look forward to using it more! Cheers, Unislash

This looks like polygon stretching at that particular area. You might want to try different UV mapping such as PUVTiles.

@aurick Aha, that definitely helped! Thanks for the tip–and fast too  . I’ll have to read more into PUV vs GUV, etc.

Again, thank you very much for your help. It is very appreciated. Once I can get this workflow going I will definitely be using ZBrush in all of my modeling.

Cheers,
Unislash
