Problems with Import/Export in Maya + Zbrush

Ok, I posted this in another thread, but I think I’ll get a better response here.

I’m having problems with exporting a mesh from Zbrush that won’t import into Maya or Wings.

Now let me explain how I came about the problem. I modeled an object, low poly, in Maya. I then exported this out as an .obj file, and imported that file into Zbrush. I detailed the object and increased the density of the mesh in Zbrush. Then I exported that object out of Zbrush, as a .obj, and back into Maya. When I reimport that .obj back into Zbrush, and assign a AUVtile layout to it, and export it out again, I can’t import it into Maya or Wings.

I’ve tried using Pixolators FixOBJType Applescript, but that didn’t work. I’ve tried importing it into http://www.uvmapper.com and that seems to change the actual text in the .obj file, but it still won’t import into Wings. I am not home right now so I can’t check if it will work in Maya or not.

If anyone knows of this issue, or a workaround, please feel free to add their knowledge here. This isn’t the first time this has happened, and I thought it was maybe because I was knew to Zbrush. And not knowing whether or not this will happen to any of my work in the future is something I don’t won’t to have to take a chance with.

Thanks in advance.

Chad

Greetings, I was also having vertex issues with ZB and Maya. Try this. i hope it helps at least untill yhe new version of ZB!

  1. Maya Create an object.
  2. Export .obj
  3. Import the same .obj back into Maya.
  4. Export again. (this corrects the vertex flip)
  5. import into ZBrush set Smooth>.01
  6. Modifiers>Deformation>Divide 3x (more if nessisary)
  7. Modifiers>Texture > AUV Tiles
  8. Paint in Texturemaster rev G
  9. save as tool (just as a backup!)
  10. Export as .obj
  11. import back into Maya.

i don’t know who originaly posted this info. I beleive it worked when i tried it.
good luck!

Thanks, I’ll make a future note to follow those steps. That will at least keep me from creating something I can’t use in the future.

But for now though, I’m looking for something to fix my current problem. If there isn’t a fix, then I guess I’ll just have to chock this up as experience, and continue on.

I found that ZBrush sometimes exports
.obj with capitals. Wings doesn’t like this.
Change to lower case and all will be fine.

I’ve been using Wings for awhile so I’m already familiar with the .OBJ/.obj conversion. Thanks for the insight though, maybe others don’t know. And changing the .OBJ to .obj didn’t help at all. It still won’t import.

I tried doing what sadicus suggested and still no go. Do you think it might be because of the amount of geometry? The piece I’m testing is around 90,000 poly’s.

Hopefully the new Zbrush won’t have this problem.

I believe remember that you just make export object from Zbrush and soon re import in zbrush and now re export
