Problem Rotating Individual ZSphere

[ZB 3.5, r3, with symmetry turned off]
I’ve attached two images, showing a zsphere in two stages of rotation. The x-axis of the zsphere is vertical. By dragging on the zsphere itself, I can rotate the zsphere around its x-axis. (The x-axis remains vertical.) However, I can not rotate the sphere such that its x-axis moves to a horizontal position. It doesn’t matter whether I try to rotate on Y, on Z, or on XYZ. The zsphere rotates in the same direction. I can, of course, drag on the canvas to rotate the entire model in any direction. But I can’t rotate only the top zsphere. I tried to mask all but the top zsphere. NG. Any help would be much appreciated.

I’m not sure why you are trying to do this. The rotation of a ZSphere essentially affects the twist of the mesh created by adaptive skin, with the axis of rotation being relative to the ZSphere’s parent. There’s no need to rotate in the way you describe.

ZSpheres can only be twisted around its Z-axis. Stationary rotation of a single ZSphere is not possible nor would it have any effect on the polymesh skinning as it is currently implemented.

The Z axis of a ZSphere is always oriented towards the parent ZSphere (there can only be one parent, which is kind of sad ). The Y axis goes from the light to the dark half and the X axis cuts between the two halves.

I am not sure of the result you are looking for but perhaps you could just generate the polymesh and then rotate the head using masking and transpose and some smoothing.

Thanks very much, Mark. That was helpful. I’m trying to learn the basics of zspheres by experimenting with simple armatures. I’ve noticed that when I have a twist in the mesh, sometimes I can correct it by <alt> dragging on a link sphere. At other times, I can correct it by rotating an individual zsphere. I don’t understand why, but that has been my experience.
