Printing in a 3D printer

Would I be able to print an image from z brush in a 3D printer and if so what would I have to save it as
Thanks
Paul

Hi spizzfay

Assuming your 3d printer doesn’t need a special proprietary format, .OBJ would be your best bet since most applications can handle it. Just click the export button in the tool palette  It will export the obj according to what level of subdivision you are on and only what is visible, so make sure you dont have anything hidden!

Most likely you will need to give them an stl file for printing. The easiest thing to do is save in .obj (as mentioned before), and convert that to stl. I believe there are free or very inexpensive tools out there to convert from .obj to .stl.

Rhino is also great for that too because in addition to being able to convert from .obj to .stl you can scale it with real world measurements, which can be helpful

I think Blender would be able to do any conversions you need for that…

There’s probably alot of info around on the net, I’d love to see some 3d printed zbrush work :o

I have printed a few things from Zbrush. Try this thread ,it has some info on
carving and printing.

WHich 3d printer are u using?

ZCorp or FDM?

Save the file as .obj and then import it into Pro Engineers 2001 software and then save it as .STL format.

Cheers!

Looks like there’s a script for that.

stl is a really simple format.

3DStudio Max has some good tools for converting your mesh to stl format for 3D printing. I printed out a model at SIGGRAPH 02, I don’t know which printer was used, but the model was made in wax. It was either a poor choice of model or of media though, because I had small pieces that broke off when I started cleaning away the scaffolding. Good detail though. I subdivided the mesh but you could still see the tiny polygons in the printed model. I’m looking forward to maybe getting some ZBrush work printed out in Boston this year.

I just downloaded AccuTrans 3D (http://www.micromouse.ca). It’s a great bit of shareware and only runs $20 US. It’ll take care of .stl’s and just about any other 3D format you want to throw at it, both object and scene files. Another thing, I had a problem with my connection (my end) and couldn’t get it to download. Wayne with Micromouse stayed with me off and on all weekend until I finally got it installed. I was very impressed by the excellent service. I would and am recommending it to anyone and everyone.
