Preserving layers of Rhino models

I am new to z-brush. I want to import a model made in Rhino and preserve its layers in z-brush. It has two sets of objects, spheres and cubes in their own respective layers.

How can I do it?

I eventually want to render the final model in Keyshot, so I want to preserve the layer structure as it is for ease of applying materials in Keyshot.
I tried stl, but it merges all the layers in one single layer.

I am using z-brush 2021.6.2 on Windows 10-64 bit.

Hello @archz2 Welcome to ZBrush Central.

I don’t own Rhino so I’m not completely sure how the layer system works in that application. If Rhino can assign material ID’s to the layers then you could export out of Rhino as an OBJ. file and in ZBrush “Preferences > ImportExport > Import”, enable the “Import Mat As Groups” option. Also, if Rhino can export FBX, the “FBX ExportImport” plugin also has “Import Mats As Polygroups”, “Import SSets As Polygroups” (Selection Sets).

Layers work like any other CAD software, example Sketchup or Autocad. You can have objects organized in different layers. For example, when modeling a house, you can have flooring in one layer, walls in one layer, furniture in another layer. Layers give you the ability to toggle their visibility and lockability.

I tried to import the OBJ file. I get the following error.

Here’s the obj file.

I imported an fbx file. All the objects have the same material. Moreover, I cannot select any other object and I can only select the box.

Here is the fbx file.

I tried both of these options.
