Praying Mantis--Updated 12-12-02--Finally finished! See second page--

This is part of my final project in 3DS Max 1 class at college. All box modelling, mostly one single mesh, except for the wings and backplate behind the front legs. I have well over 20 hours in this so far, with no materials, textures, lights, or real rendering YET. I can’t tell you how MUCH quicker I could do this with Zspheres, but my instructor said, “No Zbrush for this project” :stuck_out_tongue: :frowning: I’m still a relative newbie to Max, or I would’ve had a little less time in it, hopefully.

Criticism, constructive or otherwise, would be welcomed!

That tells you how much your instructor actually doesn’t know. Rough modeling in Zbrush and then exporting to a program like 3dmax is a way cool way of working. Ken B. has some way cool ways of setting this up.

OOPS almost forgot, nice modeling BTW.

Actually, David, my instructor DOES know! Modeling in Zbrush doesn’t teach anything ABOUT 3DS Max except for the process of importing other models from other applications. In class, we have to learn to model WITH THAT application, or he’s not doing HIS job. He thought using Zbrush would be kind of “cheating”(true!), although I MIGHT be allowed to use it for final texturing on the model, as long as I import and render it in Max. He’s very interested in Zbrush and will probably buy a copy for himself, after seeing some of my examples with the program and learning of its texturing capabilities, not to mention Zspheres!

I also did a Zbrush presentation in my Interactive Multimedia class for a final project, and a number of students as well as the teacher of that class expressed considerable interest in Zbrush, having never before heard of the program.

Thanks for the compliment!

Ha…Cool, I’m wrong (oh like that’s really rare) about your teacher, and of course he is right, box modeling is a great way to learn how to model in Max…Of course it sounds like he’s been evangelized by one of his Students.

Hi Nikko
3Dmax is ultra powerfull but not very “pleasant” to use tought ancient guys of Atari world concept it
It’s very precise and multi-uses.
Zbrush is preciseless but more “funny” and permit to make any sort of textures
It’s a good thing for you to uses both ,the mix between meticulousness and extrem flexibility can make something like an ideal !

Ps your mantis seems good and well page-setting !

hey Nikko, I have never used 3dmax …its been only Z for me…but I have to tell you that your results in the model look very clean and very cool. If I were to add anything to add to the model would be ridges around the lower abdomen to show its segments. I could be mistaken on that, but the last one I caught this past summer was about 9 inches long (a monster of a mantis) and she was segmented in the gut I believe…keep us posted on this project…Mantis are one of my favorite insects to view, then of course arachnids  good luck in the class

I like the model a lot nikko! I especially like the rough edges near the feet. :+1: but i have two suggestions for you:

-If anything REALLY need work, its the wings, it doesnt look like they’re wings, more like big bumps

-Right at the tail, there seems to be a… stick? really small, i don’t know if you did that on purpose or not, but unless there is some mantis body part I haven’t heard of…

o yes, and don’t forget to do the other half of the creature…

good luck in your class!

David

A little updated, still needs texture tweaking, lighting, and rendering. 1-2-1 would really be appreciated.

Phenomenal. Simply AWESOME!

Thanks one and all for the compliments. This project has been and is continuing to be a GREAT learning experience. Here’s a close-up to show a little detail.

As I said on TrollZBane Danny, you and this app are rockin’ together…
WONDERFUL WORK!!

If I were grading it you would get a 100 percent…coz this mantis rocks…!!!thnx for keeping us posted on your progress… :+1: :+1: :+1:

I’m starting to get a little cross-eyed looking at this thing, but I’m almost done with it. Criticism welcomed!

WOW! That is great! What’s your total time in this one?

Fantastic !!! This is only word that have !!!

Absolutly great !
Maybe if you can put the antenna in entire on the photo for a complete page-setting.
