Possible to use SSS and Displacement in Maya?

Hey,

Im trying to add some SSS to my character in Maya 8.
He has a displacement out of Zbrush.

Because the misss_fast_skin node doesnt have a diaplacement input I’m trying to out that node into the color of a blin which has the displacement… Not working so far… am I doing it wrong? Is there a way? or is it just silly to think that sss can with with a displaced object?

Thanks!

I think i may have figured it out… I just added the displacement node into the shading group of the misss_fast_skin node and it seems to be working.

I’m not a maya user but do think it is cool that your
working in the new version. I didn’t know what you meant by SSS and wanted to know what it was if it not too complex to explain.

Hey,
SSS is subsurface scattering, if you don’t know what that is its when lets say you look at a candle and the top part of the candle kind of glows and it glows less as the candle surface is farther away from the light because of the light penetrating the surface and lighting it…

or when you hold your hand up to a bright light and notice that the more thin parts of your hand are glowing red

Yea, I always jump to the newer versions of software very early… which seems to be a mistake a lot of the time… less plugin support…

I just got a message from a dude who saw this thread and needed some more details of where to add the displacement file node too.

In case anyone else needs it:

Look for the node “miss_fast_skin_maya2SG”
This node has a “Displacement Mat.” field where you can middle mouse drag your file node onto.

If you have trouble finding it, load the input and output connections of your misss shader and click on the SG node to the right of your misss shader.
