Possible system speed enhancement...

I just discovered this thread elsewhere pointing out a bug that locks the pcui express slot to 1x vs 16 x.

I also checked my OWN bios settings, to see if anything was amiss, and found that indeed, on 2 of my systems here, that the PCI express video card slot was set to PCI instead of PCI EXPRESS!

Making that one simple bios change allowed be to go from 11 million polys in zbrush to 34million polys at the same speeds! HUGE difference!

Now if I could speed up undos and redos as easily… LOL!

I don’t really understand the description on how to fix it, but it does seem like it could be an important issue to address. I have a Gigabyte P35C motherboard, so I’d be interested to see how I could address this.

Wow! 11 mil to 34 mil is quite a significant boost. I too am wondering how those with other cards/motherboards could address this.

Well, it depends if your pci slot was locked ay 1x, or if the bios was original set to only pci, and not pci express… just check the bios on startup, and see if the slot is set to pci x, or just old pci,. and make that change.

anyone with a “brand” machine like Dell, HP, Gateway or the like probably still has it set to only pci and needs to make the change I did on our systems here.

My machine’s actually pretty generic. lol. Thanks for the tips. I’ll try that.

Can anyone explain how to make these changes? It’d be appreciated.

I second Franciss question, Im not good at technical stuff and Im afraid not to mess up something. Also, I would appreciate a couple of words from Aurick on this thing. If its such a big improvement as the thread starter says it is, I think many users could benefit from knowing it and making the right steps.
Thanks in advance!

The only x I found was the 9x in reference to my CPU clock speed. All the other settings said either auto or normal, but the PCI settings all seemed to refer to megahertz, not x’s.
