Posable Symmetry + UV?

Hey guys,

I was just playing around with posable symmetry… Loaded in my base character cage model and started initializing posable symmetry. Kept getting all sorts of wierd results and bad symmetry % reports.

Then i loaded in several other models which had uv’s already properly laid out, and wow… i was getting 93% -98% posable symmetry calculations?? Tried it again on some other models which i knew was perfectly symmetrical but had no uv’s…and i was getting bad results again.

Does Zbrush require decent uv’s in order to apply posable symmetry to the model?

That’s interesting. I’ve no details yet of how to get the best from Posable Symmetry but there will be some info on the Wiki just as soon as possible. Thanks for sharing your experiments.

Where do you find this posable symmetry

Sorry abt that found the button

Hi canndis, you can finde this tool in the transform palette … over the x . y .z axis mirror system. there is…
bye

Hi Marcus,

I’ve tried so many of my older models with posable symmetry. Some are perfectly symmetrical, some have just one elbow bent for example. And the scary thing is…i can never get 100% calculated poseable symmetry ( like Mudbox can ). Topology wise, all my models are perfectly symmetrical.

I wonder how zbrush actually looks for symmetry … hmm

Phew. Glad to see I’m not the only one who can’t get this feature to work.

Did this slip through the beta testing cracks or something?

Hey Dean,

It actually works but from my experiments, it seems u need to have uv’s properly laid out. If you have messed up uv’s, and u go and hit the posable sym button, it will give u very low % symmetry accuracy or even abort the symmetry altogether.

Mark Soon

it worked flawlessly for me so far… i tried both symmetric models i built in zbrush 3.0, posing them then using posable symmetry and importing posed .obj with symmetric topology… always got ‘full symmetry found’ so far… perhaps it has something to do with pivot position…

hey peekoot,

try it on models with no uv’s or screwed up uv’s…and let us know what happens.

Mark

PS:are you getting 100% symmetry calculated on all your models?

ha! discovered problem with one mesh here as well! 18% symmetry found and no map stored…

help does say that posable symmetry allows you to have symmetric model>pose>then continue sculpting… but… on some meshes works if it’s posed already…

would be really good to figure out factors involved here…

another theory is that it might be connected to non quads in mesh… you know how .obj inserts edges to ngons… i’m pretty sure that my mesh that worked had all quads… can’t say that for the one that didn’t…

well… it’s a theory… let’s see if it’s true…

[edit]

by the way… model that worked didn’t have uvs laid out and the one that didn’t- had nicely laid out uvs… not exactly like you would expect is it?!

[2nd edit]

just checked… model that worked had 100% quads, model that didn’t had ngons

this is very weird… i just made completely symmetrical simple blob, 100% quads model with UVs and posable symmetry finds 0% (pivot is in exact center btw)… model works with ordinary symmetry and smart resym also finds full symmetry… very unexpected result!

okay man,

U know what? The model that worked for me had 100% quads as well. And the other models with bad calculations were the ones with tris and stuff in it.

I think u may be on to something here peekoot

yeah… .would be true if my last test didn’t come up all wrong… all perfect conditions and still complete failure… am gonna keep looking…

guys, i attached the very simple model i was referring to… perfectly symmetrical in 2 axis, both in shape and topologically, small, with uv maps that hardly can get any better… all quads… 0% symmetry found… could someone try it out and see whether he/she can figure out why this is happening?

I’m having no problems with meshes with tri’s in here… I’m approaching this by hitting Use Poseable Symmetry on the highest subd BEFORE posing, then I can turn on or off the symmetry (with the ‘x’ button) any time and symmetry carries on working as expected. Is it possible you are activating it on models already out of symmetry? It’s possible that it matters.

hey rhumba… check out my previous post… i uploaded very simple symmetrical model that should be perfect for posable symmetry but i get 0% symmetry found… could you try it and let us know whether it works for you? would be much appreciated…

sorry peekoot, I didn’t see that post for some reason. You are right, this one doesn’t work, exactly as you described.

weird huh?!

thanks for trying!

this is so wierd. I wonder what’s going on? It sux how when pixologic releases each version of zbrush, there aren’t any docs on how things work. So we’re all here like pulling out our hairs, and wondering wtf is going on and what da proper way to use these new features are…
