Posable Symmetry not working at all...

Below is a picture of my mesh and the problems I’m having…

[Posable_Symmetry.jpg]

You can see in the picture that I have 2 parts that need posable symmetry on. The torso has been twisted into a gestural pose but the geometry is perfectly symmetrical. The legs are actually just one object, imported in a perfectly mirrored state. I used transpose to put both the legs and torso into a more natural posed position…

When I select either sub-tool (legs or torso) and press the Posable Symmetry button along the X axis (and on the top sub-division level), nothing happens. My cursor doesn’t turn green and posable symmetry isn’t on or working at all.

EDIT ADDED: Now there is one instance with this project where posable symmetry seems to be working perfectly. I grabbed the head geometry and just used a transpose rotation to have him staring down with a tilt and turning on transpose for that seems to work just fine. However, using this same technique, to tilt and rotate the chest armor (not shown), symmetry is not working.

I feel that I have meet all the requirements for posable symmetry to work, and it seems very hit or miss at this point. So if someone can explain to me why it isn’t working it would be appreciated. -Derek

Did you mean when you say geometry is symmetrical, you mean the topology? 'cause it appears your mesh topology isn’t symmetrical?.. That would cause posable symmetry to fail. And, on your edit: addendum, it appears you’re trying to use posable symmetry with transpose? It doesn’t work with transpose.

The topology is perfectly symmetrical. Using transpose, without masking, worked on the two pieces of geometry that make up the head. Using the same technique, transpose without masking, on his chest protector did not work.

Finally the legs and torso used both the tweak brush and transpose with and without masking to position them into place and symmetry doesn’t work with these objects at all.

If what you say is correct and you cannot use transpose before finding symmetry then I don’t see the point of this tool.

I should also note that I just did a test… I went back to an early save, where nothing had yet been moved and everything was just as it was when first imported and posable symmetry did not work on the same objects, while it still worked for the other objects. So apparently the actual posing had nothing to do with posable symmetry not working. Something about the models exported from Maya seems to be the problem.

Please describe your steps.

In Maya, I make the right half of a model. Then I mirror clone it and merge the result for a perfectly symmetrical model.

Next I import all the symmetrical models as sub-tools in ZBrush.

At this point, only certaint models are being recognized by the posable symmetry function along the X axis.

The legs, while one Subtool, look to be 2 seperate meshes. I don’t think Posable Symmetry was ever intended to work on something like that.

I would understand that but Posable symmetry isn’t even working on the torso or the chest plate -which isn’t shown in the picture. I see no reason why it shouldn’t work on those 2 objects.

Any ideas yet why this isn’t working?
