polypaint vs texture painting

hey guys dumb question was the benifits or difference between polypaint vs texture painting

there is no need to unwrap using AUV,GUV, or etc., basically lets you start painting.

so basically u only need to use texture painting if u wanna exprt the model. right

this should help

Actually willymelvin, you can always transfer the polypainting you do on a model to a UV wrapped texture if you decide to export it later. My favorite method for doing this is using the Polypaint plugin created by Svengali here:

In Zbrush 3.1 you can now even polypaint with textures (for example a grass texture or brick wall texture) directly on your model using the standard brush. You can create UVs later and then transfer all your painting to a texture when you export!

Polypainting is becoming very natural and intuitive, as well as exportable – in short, it’s worth learning to use!!

The docs mention that you can either export your model to create UVs in another app or create the UVs inside ZBrush itself. I notice that in Jason’s tutorials, he always prefers to export (to Maya or Blender, say) to make UVs. Wouldn’t it be simpler just to use ZB’s UV-creation button? Or does it not work as well as people would like?

Yes!! It would be SO much simpler, apart from the possibility that another texture artist in the ‘pipeline’ uses Photoshop for painting, to further, or edit the mesh’s textures
(ever tried painting over an AUV or GUV generated texture in PS? I hope not!)
Certainly both AUV (and GUV tiles) offer more accuracy, but not for those un-atuned to ZBrush editing

Ah, I see. For now, I’m the only person in my “pipeline,” so I’ll try using AUV or GUV for now.

Auv tiling is good, but sometimes especially for hero like characters people prefer to assign uv mapping in other softwares as its much easier to assign mapping to different accessories on the body then in zbrush.

I am also in with you in this pipeline because I have no experience with other softwares.

I havent reached the texturing part yet in z3 yet (subtools can change lot of things), so will get back to you as soon as I finish my sculpting

Keep posting how far you reach with uv mapping in zbrush.
