Hi. I have a model with a bunch of poly paint and I want to convert that to polygroups. When I do it it seems to like to give me about 3 or so Polygroups out of the 25 different polypaint colors.
Is there a way to help/fix this?
Thanks

Hi @rv_el!
You should be able to adjust the tolerance slider to the right of the “From Polypaint” button in the Polygroup menu to control how many groups you get.
Obviously a mesh with big, bold swatches of high contrast colors will be easier to work with here than a more subtle paintjob.
Thanks! It was so tucked in the corner I didn’t even know there was a slider there at all.
It seems really finicky. Even at a low setting with not too many groups I can still get little polys scattered around. When I crank it up for more polygroups I get this issue much heavier. Little color polys all over the place.
The average best i’ve seen is around .3-.5. And then having to hand-break stuff up. Which is usually better than going higher like .7 and then having to detach and reconnect and weld a bunch of little polys.
I don’t understand why it has issues with some areas.
Any tips are much appreciated. I’m having to do a lot of clean up.
This is everywhere.
The big blue patch is clearly tan in polypaint and it likes to do little speckles everywhere between where 2 meet. probably because there is blending. Would like to sharpen it may be.
You can clean up the results a bit with Polygroup functions like “merge similar groups”, and “merge stray groups”.
It is not, however, a precision tool. If you want more control, you may want to use Polygroupit instead. This will let establish groups for logical surface zones, then expand them so they fill in all the way to each other’s borders.
It will take more manual work, but that’s the price you pay for control
Thanks! Never knew about that.
The clean up stuff like Merge Stray doesn’t really do what I would hope. Seems to do nothing really. I even did a quick PolygroupIt and it left a few small triangles in places and Merge didn’t clean it up.
